Show The Fuels in the Case NEW YORK Dec 30A dispatch to the World from Matanzas Cuba says Having heard that there was trouble between the government of Cuba and the United States consul at Matanzas your correspondent investigated and finds the facts to be these On Christmas eve when Gomes was wildly riding about Chilizeo only 25 miles distant from Matanzas Consul i Alexander Brice sent a telegram to Consulgeneral Williams at Havana i stating that the city was in the hands I of the volunteers and that the lives of I American citizens were in grave danger Mr Williams was much disturbed I dis-turbed by the dispatch He did not believe I be-lieve any real danger existed but he I felt that duty required him to forward I the claim of Consul Brice for protection protec-tion to the secretary of state at Washington Wash-ington and did so on Christmas day Brice had asked that the secretary be cabled Mr Williams went to the palace and saw General Campos informally in-formally The latter expressed surprise sur-prise and assured the consulgeneral there was no foundation for Consul Brices fears Mr Williams went to the bottom of the subject and then i sent on Christmas night a cable to the I secretary of state that the Americans I in Matanzas were not in danger The government of Cuba was much annoyed annoy-ed over the incident and the governor of Matanzas was notified from Havana immediately He addressed the communication com-munication to Consul Brice asking him to inform him of the cause of his assertion as-sertion that Americans were in danger and to point out any specific reason why he thought such danger existed Consul Brice was placed in an embarrassing embar-rassing position He could not produce any proof and replied that his dispatch to Consulgeneral Williams was not correctly interpreted thus throwing the responsibility on the latter I |
