Show I ST MASKS ASTOR Rev J B Halsey of Philadelphia Philadel-phia Called and Has Accepted WILL PREACH ON JAN 5 HAS A HIGH REPLTPATIOX AS A I PULPIT ORATOR I His Selection as Dean Will Harmonize Har-monize Old Elements in i the Church and Close tj > the Breach That Has Existed Since the Old Vestrymen Resigned I I The discord which for some time past I has existed within the ranks of the I membership of St Marks church in this city has been changed to harmony and soon the congregation which has been threatened with disruption will unite as if there had been no such a state of affairs af-fairs as a disagreement between bishop I and congregation The compromise has been effected in the shape of calling anew I a-new dean to take charge of the church That personage will shortly make his debut in the new field to which he has been called to labor and his arrival will not only be gratifying news to me members mem-bers of that church but to the peoPle of the city in general The pastor who has been elected to fill the pulpit at St Marks cathedral ii the liev James B Halsey of Rox I borough a suburb of Philadelphia Pennsylvania f lt fuP 1 nr sylvania and he will arrive in time to I preach his initial sermon in thiS city on January 5th I jiie selection of kIev Halsey is said toJ as OonnefHf to be a good one He has lor many years I nlled responsible pulpits in the east having hav-ing for the past tour years been the pastor I I pas-tor of St Timothy one of the most influential I I in-fluential churches in Philadelphia I Prior to that time he labored in Minnesota I I Air Halsey comes highly recommended and though comparatively a young man has an enviable reputation as a puiplt orator His coming will undoubtedly be a valuable acquisition to the ministerial minister-ial corps of Salt Lake The work of securing the services of an expounder of the gospel that would meet with the approval ot all the members or bt Marks has not been effected without considerable consider-able diihcuity Ever since the unfortunate difference arose between Bishop Leonard and that contingent < < of the congregation which favored the return of Rector Nor ric the organization has been on the wane but the bishop has maintained an attitude antagonistic to the selection of any pastor not agreeable to him Many of the congregation as has been previously previous-ly announced favored the return of Rev Norris but the consent of the bishop could never be secured The breach between be-tween the bishop and many of ohs flock grew wider and wider and finally culminated culmi-nated in a wholesale resignation of vestrymen ves-trymen Ever since the new vestry was I elected last October the work of harmonizing har-monizing the opposing factions has been going on until finally Rev Halsey was I agreed upon His selection was the choice of the bishop and the friends of Mr Norris Nor-ris were equally content to accede to the bishops wishes in order that the work in the Masters vineyard ighc be continued contin-ued Accordingly a call was forwarded oRe o-Re Halsey and finally after some six weeks of anxious waiting the letter of acceptance came From a letter received by a prominent member of the church yesterday it was learned that the new dean will start on his westward journey from Philadelphia today After a brief visit in Minnesota I his old field of labor he will come directly direct-ly to Salt Lake and is expected to arrive ar-rive here about January 3 |
