nights for neither the strike leaders the traction officials or the mayor and the other heads of departments sought their homes during the night Active work was resumed as early as 3 am when a strikers committee went to the Pennsylvania railroad station and intercepted in-tercepted a delegation of railway workers from BaltimoreAn Baltimore-An Ominous Calm The story goes that these men had been sent for by the traction people to take the place of the strikers but that the latter induced the newcomers to return to Baltimore and paid their fares When daybreak came the city was wrapped in an ominous calm which continued throughout the day barring a few minor outbreaks This was due to the stringent police regulations Enough special men had been sworn in to raise the number to over 2500 and every one of these was on duty At every principal point in the city detachments de-tachments of armed police were concentrated con-centrated and scattered all along the more frequented thoroughfares were bluecoats in plenty Following an order from Director Bitler any gathering consisting of more than five persons was instantly dispersed Several peaceable citizens resented this and were promptly arrested ar-rested V Spasmodic Attempts Throughout the day spasmodic attempts at-tempts to keep several of the lines in motion were made but in every instance in-stance the crawling cars bore more policemen than passengers This attracted at-tracted from the crowds more derision than violence On the Market street line the cars were running with an average of four policemen on front and rear platforms and surrounded by a cordon of mounted officers These were invariably greeted with hoots and cries of ridicule The Eighth street line was the only branch which attempted at-tempted to run cars with anything approaching ap-proaching regularity These were guarded by four policemen each and were patronized slightly by the public Tenth street ran cars at intervals and carried a few passengers There were no attempts made to molest cars on any of these lines Through a howling Moll The earliest report of trouble came from the Ridge avenue depot at 1030 A car with a quartette of policemen was started out laind crawled safely through a howling mob of several thousand strikers and sympathizers A short distance away however ain obstacle was encountered in the shape of debris piled on the tracks of a heap pied te trcks to tine height of a car A mob surrounded sur-rounded the car and was only restricted restrict-ed from violence by the sight of gleam ing revolvers in the hands of the police When the debris thud been cleared away the car moved on but had not awuy te proceeded more than a few feet when there was a fusDade of rocks and stones Attempts to stop cars were made in the mills district but the clubs drove police with the aid of their cubs off the mob On the Fifth and Sixth street lines an attempt was made by a gang of boys to pull out the switches At noon a mail car was started from the Ridge avenue depot with a new motorman 1 new conductor and a full complement of clerks The depot was surrounded by 3 mob of 2000 or 3000 people but they allowed the car to get about a block away A New Woman Then le by the wife of the new motorman a assault was made on the car and the woman herself dragged her husband from the platform The outbreak out-break was only quelled by the arrival of a regular car loaded with police This was attached to the rear of the mail car and Uncle Sams vehicle Wa pushed around the route A Fifth and Sixth street car was attacked doWntown down-town by a crowd of such magnitude that the police were temporarily overwhelmed over-whelmed A number of the rioters boarded the front platform and rained blow after blow on the motorman who was only saved from further danger dan-ger by the arrival of an additional detachment de-tachment of police Attempted barricades barri-cades were made at various points along the lines during the day but late in the afternoon the cars ceased running ning and this sort of trouble ended Inciting to Violence What threatened t be a serious affray occurred at Twelfth and Market street this afternoon A immense crowd was congregated there wlhich the police attempted to disperse Several Sev-eral men tried to incite the mob to violence vio-lence and an effort < was made to arrest ono of the leaders Instantly the larger te portion of the crowd became unruly and made an unorganized charge on and the police The aspect of affairs grew so threatening that several of the mounted officers were compelled to fire several shots in the air This put a stop to the uprising but it led to many sensational reports of strikers being shot down strikers committee was practic The stker practc ally in session all day receiving reports and directing the various subcommittees subcommit-tees During the morning the members mem-bers looked twvxrn and tired but by night oe 1eIl spirits had risen considerably consider-ably and they iwere more cheerful than at any time thus far Strikers frequently fre-quently entered the rooms arm in arm with men recite from the companys ranks It was usually announced that more than 200 employees of the principal prin-cipal ibranohes had joined the association associa-tion and Chat those who are not already al-ready members will join the strikers ranks tomorrow 1 Al Meeting Today Ono statement was made by President Malhon whllch pleased the strikers It was that the rival company to theta the-ta ton which is running all Its lar had consented to meet the committee with which President Welch of the Union traction hadi declined to confer The meeting will be held tomorrow I Is also said rat the motormen and conductors of this company proposed organizing and had agreed to give to days wages lt the association This line runs about 100 cars Tonight the strikers held a number df meetings close to the various depots de-pots with a view of encouraging each other to hold out The mite liquor league held a meetIng meet-Ing today and commended Mayor War wick for his action of last night in ordering all saloons closed after 6 p m This order will remain in effect until un-til further notice and tonight no liquor can be bought over a bar A committee com-mittee of Grand Army men called on the mayor and offered its services in enlisting 1000 of the soldiers should the occasion demand It The employ ees of the Philadelphia Traction company com-pany one of the branches were paid I off today but there < was no disorderly demonstration More Deputies The most important development of the afternoon was the Issuance by United States Marshal Cotesbury of this notice Information having been given tome to-me t > y Postmaster Carty and United
