Show All A Servants affected by hard times AM r I 1 e yaa I 1 1 I ura hiltl the recent lecent hard times have W not solved the servant problem they have revolutionized it in some of its aspects according to the annual report of 0 tho the commissioner ot of licenses john N bogart which was sent t to mayor mcclellan the other day the servants sen ants position Is not what it was a year ago the report shows and tho the change appears to have hae been brought about by the law of supply and de ni 7 mand in the report which covers the it 11 cense year ending with the month of april a record Is shown of the falling off in the volume of business and also a surprising reduction in the scale of wages business depression has not only at af fectea the contract labor agencies and domestic servant bureaus but it has 4 been felt in the theatrical agencies jn in aken agencies cles supplying stenographers and in those filling technical and clerical positions the report shows that beginners in stenography are now paid six and seven dollars a week against eight and nine dollars a year ago the same houses which have reduced the salaries sal ailes of their employed emp loyes have since january reduced in u number their clerical cleil cal force of all grades from 30 to BO 50 tier per cent referring to the intelligence offices tho the report says the books of domestic servant agencies indicate that the average earnings of cooks cooka in private families have fallen oft off from 35 to a month who were paid froni from 16 to 26 25 a month in 1907 are receiving from 13 to 23 in 1908 the average wages paid to cooks obtained through agencies that supply the wealthier families have been re deuced from 50 to 45 a month and in tho the same families the wages paid but lers have fallen oft off from 55 to 50 a month many other families havo reduced the wages of all help employed by them since last december about ten per cent and the gumbe numbe of servants has been greatly decreased the remainder of the report taking the different classes of labor separate ly gives pessimistic totals showing that in practically all branches blanches a reduction has bus been found |
