Show i GUXXISOX GOSSIP I I Canal Company Assuming Definite Shape School Affairs GUNNISON Utah Dec 15 Several men started work again Friday on the East Main canal I has been said that this company were now going to incorporate incor-porate but i is now given out on good authority though no reason is given that the matter will be deferred for awhile The Kearnes and RobbIns canal mention men-tion cf whicH seemed to be omitted in a former communication to The Herald describing the Gunnison Irrigating district dis-trict has been widened t sixteen feet that it might be extended to a point live miles north of Fayette a distance of 13 miles from where it begins three miles below Willow Creek on the east iide of the Sevier river The extension is eight feet wide and is now nearly limshed The Gunmson City Canal company is now assuming definite shape John Nou gar of Manti has been busy with a force of hands the past threa days locating I the ditch and surveying the unclaimed lands falling under its level so that immediate entries may be made The company held a meeting yesterday and transacted important business A force of men will be put to work and the construction of the canal commenced in dead earnest tomorrow morning and pushed to completion if moderate weather continues There are already 138 names subscribd for shares which subscription sub-scription speaks for 1500 acres I is not yet definitely ascertained but it is thought there will be about COO acres more to divide up The call for a school meeting for next Saturday the purpose of which is to vote upon a tax for the erection of additional ad-ditional schoolroom ha caused a double shuffle move to come upon those who favor building by donation They have resumed work in all earnestness upon the two school houses begun last spring From present indications there is no doubt that tho tax will be voted down the district being feo much scattered that a unity of action is hardly probable prob-able A hard condition confronts the trustees and the people and something must be done to relieve i The school accommodations have long been inadequate inade-quate and the increasing enrollment is more than can be met by the present facilities Owing to the dilapidated condition of its floor regular dancing parties have not been given in the R S hal for nearly two years past A new floor of Oregon pine lumber has now been put In and the Initiation was a grand social tendered by the seventies quorum on Friday night A most enjoyable time was had the serving of picnic in the course of the evening adding much to the pleasure of the occasion Bishop Christiansen and wife and several others from Mayfield were present by invita tino |
