Show HAMMOJiDS CASE Senators Interview Secretary Olney on the Matter WASHINGTON Jan 20 Senators White and Perkins of California had an interview with Secretary Olney today to-day concerning the imprisonment of Mr Hammond and other Americans in the Transvaal and afterwards made the following statement as to the situation situ-ation there We are satisfied that the secretary of state has done and is doing his utmost ut-most to protect American interests in the Transvaal I Mr Olney stated that statements made derogatory to Mr Munyon our I consular agent at Johannesburg are untrue Mr Munyon was endorsed for appointment by exMayor Grace of New York and Mr Grace certifies to I his high character and fitness He Is the agent in the Transvaal of a large American mercantile concern Mr mercantie oncrn I Munyon has informed the department I I that while Hammond is confined and I is separated from his associates still he is being considerately treed sti I Wilts Tvho a sent frequent dJ patches from London with ireference to Mr Hammond requested that the consular agent of the United States at I Cape Town should be instructed to act Senators Perkins and White joined in the request The seoretary of slate while confident that Mr Munyon will do his duty nevertheless to gratify those who had doubts upon the subject cabled to the consular agent at Cape Town who by the way is a British I subject to go to Pretoria which is fortyeight hours distant at once In view of this action it is not thought I probable that any real danger can arise without due notice to our government I |
