Show WALL SI SCARED > BY CUBA RUMORS Fearful of Strained Relations With Spain TRADING WAS DULL AND PRICES SAGGED ANOTHES BIG GOLD SHIPMENT WAS ANNOUNCED Wheat Market Showed an Upward i I Tendency Under the Influence of Bullish Crop Hews Brisk Bidding bid-ding at the London Wool Sales Live Stock Markets New York May 13 There was a single sin-gle effective rallying point in todays market and the only interruption to the sagging of prices was the occasional brief buying ofshorts in some stocks to cover The strength of American securities se-curities in London and the buying by London in this market which have been factors in the last two days in sustaining the market were less conspicuous I con-spicuous today American stocks became be-came heavy and dull in London after the opening here that market apparently apparent-ly having become discouraged at the persistent distrust displayed by the New York markets of its own securities Quite aserious view was taken in the I street of the developments Washington Washing-ton and the hints thrown out by parties to the conferences of information in the I state of affairs existing in Cuba calling for interference This coupled with the suggestive course of the senate toward suggetve the Morgan resolution and a belief I that i wi be passed was taken as foreshadowing a more aggressive Cuban policy on the part ot the administration I ad-ministration and the dealers in stocks were inclined by these advices to discount dis-count a possible fall in values from strained relations with Spain on this question A report also found credence I that i was in prospect to displace the tariff bill in the senate by the Cuban tarif bi I question as more urgently calling for early settlement report which was used by the bears with good effect in I adding to the weight on the market The announcement of a 1000000 gold shipment by Saturdays steamer in face cf a rather weak exchange market shows that the limit of no profit is not yet crossed witn demand sterling at 48V4 The exchange market stiffened to some extent just before the closing I of trading and further shipments of i gold are felt to be not improbable Al I I though this probability was discounted j several days ago by the selling of I stocks I had an effect in depressing values in the narrow and professional fl market and in discouraging trading Although todays sales were larger than those of yesterday there were no signs of any outside interest in the market aside from the dealings for London account There was said to be some selling a well as buying f London Lon-don account during the day but the I 4 purchases exceeded the sales by 10000 Ti shares a fact to be considered in connection con-nection with the exchange situation Sugar and Chicago Gas were under special pressure and although they were influenced by special causes the I volume of the transactions in them Imparted j I im-parted a sympathetic heaviness to the I general list The grangers were quite firmly held in the early trading but I later succumbed and showed a decline as great as the average Losses were i remarkably uniform in the active stocks 1 the decline ranging from to
