Show I CHANgE is NEEDED The Agricultural College at Logan is Surely Retrograding Re-trograding AN ABSENCEOF HARMONY President Tanner Blamed For the Existing Troubles I Seems to Be the Wrong Man For the a Important Position Students Are Leaving the College Dissensions in the Faculty The Cost of Maintenance Main-tenance I HERE is something some-thing wrong with the agricultural 441 agri-cultural College at Logan unless s all signs fail e l is a matter I j I for much regret q re-gret and The Herald reluctantly S reluct-antly voices 1 such a conclu concu sion but such conditions exist as to warrant no other conclusion For along a-long time complaints both loud and long have been in the air and as the months g by they have became louder Icnger and more frequent At least one newspaper of Logan has charged the misfortunes of the institution to the president and that there has been much friction between that official and a great body of the students is evidenced evi-denced by numerous facts ONE INSTANCE Some time ago an entertainment to which a number of distinguished guests were invited was arranged in the university chapel The president made certain announcements in chapel and so the students claim assumed dictatorial powers in an overbearing manner regarding the conduct of the affair As a result the students systematically sys-tematically boycotted the entertainment entertain-ment although they had bought their tickets Such a circumstance would not in itself be conclusive though when students in a body systematically ally and by arrangement boycott an official of the college there is usually mmp hlnrnp to ho nttnohpfl to the man n nn n n STUDENTS LEAVING A far more significant and unfortunate unfortu-nate fact however is the fact that the students are leaving college There are not nearly so many students now at the institution as there were last year this time Think of that One of the highest institutions in Utah with its thousands of dollars furnished fur-nished it by the state and by the government gov-ernment for its maintenance yet nevertheless it is retrograding The actual enrollment of students this year is 20 less than last year but this does not represent the loss for a great many students whose names are on the res later have left And the number so leaving are not confined strict to those who have gone home because of the pressure of farm work But it may be urged that the decrease in enrollment is due to hard times and is the same the country over Such Is not the case Educators ear that never was higher education so popular as now Young men and young women are seeking the schools in greater numbers num-bers than ever THE B Y ACADEMY The B Y Academy situated also at Logan illustrates this The academy emy is over crowded Quarters for class rooms have had to be secured in three separate buildings outside the college grounds and still there is not enough room Furthermore the B Y Academy does not furnish free tui tion as does the Agricultural College 20 The Agricultural but charges per year Agr culurl College has a magnificent lo cation magnificent buildings with conveniences to the student for reedy ins education in almost everything desired sired is I French German mathemat ks military drill and tactics as wells as manual training science and all the varied branches that go to make up a great university course Yet though I is a much smaller institution with no government or state aid the B Y Academy has gained an enrollment of I gdo ti t gained 40 pupils over the other institution I in-stitution with all its boasted advantages advan-tages SOMETHING MUST BE DONE Logan people have been prouder of their Agricultural college than of anything any-thing else They are jealous of Its fame and the time was when the casting cast-ing of any reflections upon its management man-agement would have been immediately and summarily resented But now Logan Lo-gan people concede that something must be done to regain the lost supremacy su-premacy and insure success of the college col-lege I Even those who agree that President Joseph M Tanner Is a courteous educated gentleman anA the writer is one of these even such people agree that the president is lacking in those qualities which are necessary to the upbuilding of a great college DISSENSIONS IN THE FACULTY I is conceded that dissension exists in the faculty as well as amongst the students and i is more than hinted that the president is the cause Such dissension did not exist before people say and they can think of no possible reason for them now except that a man is president who is trying to earn two salaries and is wholly unfitted by training to earn the one as college president however well he may be fitted I reporter fit-ted for the position as supreme court COST OF MAINTENANCE I For the maintenance of the college from June 30 1897 to June 30 1S9S the I following sums will be expended STATE FUND General maintenance 11730 00 IT 0 I General maintenance January 1 to I June SO 1S97 700000 Extension 1 shops g i Repairing and sewerage 200000 I Maintenance of training school 2000 0 I Extension of laboratories 200000 College I government L 23000 g I Experiment station fund 15000 00 i Internal revenues estimated 500000 I 2 00 I j I is indeed unfortunate that these sums together with the other great resources re-sources of the college the buildings and the prestige of its once good name It is indeed unfortunate that these resources re-sources must be expended or at least their expenditure directed by a man who seems to have been a signal failure as a college president and who Insists or > attending also to the office exacting duties of another Important |
