Committee Presented at the Meeting Meet-ing of the Board of Education Last Night Applications From Teachers Maintenance 198000 00 Interest on bonds 40250 00 Levy for sinking fund 54077 00 Total 292327 00 And further that an additional tax of 1 mill on the dollar on all taxable property within said city is necessary to be collected to be used exclusively for the purchase of school sites and the erection of school buildings The above is what the board of education edu-cation decided last night is necessary in order to keep the public school machinery ma-chinery of this city going during the coming year In brief it means that ale a-le of l2l mills on every dollar of taxable property in the city will be necessary to carry on the work These figures of course include the state levy of 3 mills HEAVIER THAN LAST YEAR The levy will be somewhat heavier than last year on account of the necessity ne-cessity of reimbursing the sinking fund to the extent of 3797733 money used by the board to carry on the schools which would otherwise have been compelled com-pelled to close on account of the recent decision of the supreme court affecting the collection of school tax in the city for the maintenance of county schools THE COMMITTEE REPORT The committee on finance presented the report relative to the amount necessary upon which the assessor should base his levy and the same was adopted as follows Your committee on finance in compliance com-pliance with section 45 chapter 13 of the school law presents the following statement and estimate of the amount necessary for the support and maintenance main-tenance of the schools under its charge for the school year commencing the first day of July 1897 and the amount necessary to pay the interest accruing on bonds Issued by the board and the amount of sinking fund necessary to be collected during the year and the amount of an additional tax necessary to be collected to reimburse the sinking sink-ing fund for the amount taken and used for the maintenance of the schools during the school year ending June 30 1897 and an additional tax of 1 mill on the dollar on all taxable property within said city necessary to be collected col-lected and used for the exclusively purchase I pur-chase of school sites and the erection of school buildings and we recommend I the adoption of the following resolution resolu-tion Resolved by the board of education of Salt Lake City that the amount necessary for the support and maintenance main-tenance of the schools under its charge for the school year commencing July 1 1897 be and Is hereby fixed at the sum of 198000 and the amount necessary neces-sary to pay the interest accruing during dur-ing such year on bonds issued by the board now outstanding and unpaid h 540230 and the amount of sinking fund necessary to be collected during SIKT I year for the payment and redemption I of said bonds is 10100 also for the reimbursing re-imbursing of the sinking fund taken and used during the school year ending I June 30 1897 under the provision fAn f-An act to authorize boards of education I educa-tion of cities of the first and second class to use their several sinking funds for the maintenance of the schools for the years 189G1897 Approved March I 2 1897 Providing an additional tax not to exceed 1 mills on the dollar on all taxable property within salQ I city of 3797733 total levy for sinking fund 5407733 1 And further that an additional tax of 1 mill on the dollar on all taxable property within said city is necessary to be collected to be used exclusively for the purchase of school sites and the erection of school buildings And that the president and the clerIc of this board be and are hereby instructed in-structed to certify to the same to the assessor and
