Show ARE WORKING NIGIIT AND DAY NIHT Candidates for the Judgeship Leaving No Pebble Unturned Un-turned JUDGE JUDDS CHANCES His Friends Are Not Pulling for Second Place I I Tennessee People Do Not Believe I That Wests Name Will Ever Bu Seriously Considered by the I President Cannon Hurrying Back Home on the Limited Apparently Ap-parently with the Idea of Patching Patch-ing Up His Fences Is Afraid of Papa Special to The Herald WASHINGTON a 5Several Utah men met Representative Patterson of Tennessee at the White House yesterday yester-day while awaiting the action of the president on the statehood proclamation proclama-tion The usual greetings were exchanged when exGovernor West Inquired of the gentleman from Tennessee What are you doing here I am here on Washington business replied Patterson The Utah men did not catch on but later as The Herald correspondent was leaving the White House Representative Representa-tive Washington of Tennessee Judds friend came in He admitted he had come to see the president in Judds interest in-terest He says Judd will have the support sup-port of the entire Tennessee delegation In congress the present governor of Tennessee and of the former governor H Clay Evans also of some members of the Utah bar Washington says he does not believe Governor Wests name will be seriously considered by the president pres-ident In view of remonstrances that have come on from members of the bar of Utah He says John Marshall is the attorney for the railroads and that his friend Parley Williams who will arrive tomorrow to help Marshall Is also Therefore Washington thinks Judd will be appointed When asked whether Judd might be appointed attorney if he failed to secure the judgeship Washington replied re-plied In tho parlance of the race track we are not pla ig Judd for second place Delegate Cannon left Washington tonight to-night direct for Utah He had intended going via New York but when he received re-ceived information last night to the effect ef-fect that George Q Cannon would probably prob-ably enter the contest for the senator ship he changed his plans and went direct di-rect home Junius F Wells will remain until Monday Mon-day He will go to New York thence to Mexico I is believed he is for Marshall Mar-shall for judge though he protests he is here on business and will let the other side fight it out I is none of my affair said he I was reported today that Governor West had said he had the judgeship sure and some of the Utah men including Cannon were afraid this might be so but their fears are groundless according accord-ing to friends of the other candidates TeloRrant I Governor West this morning received the following telegram While the people of Utah are grateful to Almighty God for the great boon of statehood they do not forget the noble work you have done in helping to secure this splendid consummation That you may reap the full reward of your manly efforts is my wish and that of your many friends in Utah now a free state in our glorious Union Signed WILFORD WOODRUFF The Post this morning welcomes the coming and speeds the parting guest I bids good bye to Frank Cannon and extends ex-tends the freedom of the city to C E Ale I is understood that Ale will not wait his credentials from Governor Wells and the secretary of state but some member will tomorrow introduce Allen to the house and move that the oath of office be administered immediately as was done in the case of Mr Newlands of Nevada and others in like cases on former occasions |
