Show MKINLEY MEN WILD Hanna Letter Agitates the Goldbug Gang SPOILS A LITTLE SCHEME CANNOT TAFFY THE VOTERS THIS PALL Marcus Lays Down the Lines and Its Stand or Pall By Them Tribune Boasts Glen Miller But Glen Stands PatThomas Says It Makes No Difference But Is WorriedCounty Republicans Declare De-clare For Silver Protection and Reciprocity and Arthur Is Kicking Kick-ing Against the Pricks These McKinley Republicans are a queer lot Just because United States Marshal Glen Miller gave the reporters Mark Hannas letter for publication yesterday yes-terday morning they have been and still are jumping on him so to speak with both feet roasting stewing frying basting bast-ing baking and fricaseelng him calling him ajackass a dolt a chump an old fool and all that sort of thing It began early when the Tribune snarled at him a vicious snarl one calculated to give the boys the proper tip The Tribune said In another part of this mornings Tribune will be found a letter over the I signature of Mark Hanna It was written to Mr Glen Miller of this city It does not want to see silver mentioned by Utah Republicans this year It begins by stating stat-ing that I have been informed that it has been suggested that the Republican party of Utah at the next state convention endorse en-dorse in Its platform the free coinage of silver That is doubtless true Doubtless Marshal Miller has so informed him Indeed In-deed It is plainer than a photograph that g Jtalgl 1 r Ylt gfe f ic did and his protest which immediately follows was doubtless asked for br the same informant Mark Hanna has aright a-right as chairman of the national Republican Re-publican committee to tender his advice to the Republicans of this state but his letter reveals the fact that he knows no I more about public sentiment than Marshal I Miller himself seems to It is simply a j fool letter called out by an impertinent federal official who never had a large following I I fol-lowing in Utah and who certainly never 1 will have if he hopes to win through his i i present devices He cannot in Utah in such a programme as he proposes get I men enough to give him one judge of election at each polling place Just now I he would make a better showing by retiring re-tiring within his federal office and closing the door I Following this scoring the lay members of the party proceeded to flay Mr Miller alive He got it on all sides I CHAIRMAN WALTON Chairman Wesley K Walton of the I state committee considered the publication of the letter bad politics That was I about all the chairman had to say concerning I con-cerning the matter except to suggest that some folks ought to be muzzled Fred I McGurrin private secretary to Arthur Brown when the latter was spending a few days in the senate declared Miller must be a chump to make such a letter known in these distressing times and believes It would hurt the party POSTMASTER THOMAS Chairman Thomas of the Republican county committee was averse to the discussion dis-cussion of the question for the reason he knew nothing of the circumstances which inspired the letter It was very evident i to hm that Mark Hanna did not write I the letter without solicitation for he is a i shrewd man too shrewd to set himself up as a dictator of the Republican party in I UtahBut said Mr Thomas emphatically I I it makes no difference whether Mr Hanna Han-na believes in free silver or not we Republicans I Re-publicans I in Utah are ring to work for our own si interests A wide scope fr opinion j I I opin-ion is allowed within a party thus we II find Louisiana Democrats voting for a I tariff on sugar and Maryland Democrats voting for protection on coal I see no I I reason why we cannot declare for silver In Utah because it is to our Interest Mr Thomas admitted that the letter had I I no good effect Republicanism in Utah but to what extent ho was not prepared I I to say As a rule the straight Republicans preferred pre-ferred not to talk These are trying times I Anything said during this crisis may be I used against the talker some time in the future From indications it would seem I I that the rank and file the boys who work for the part believe in standing by Hanna I i Han-na and Miller I i MILLER STANDS PAT I I By tho way Miller is standing pat I Standing Pat off as it were He is not I ashamed of what he has done and is with j I i Hanna Glen and Mr Thomas had a I meeting in a Main street drug store yesterday I j yes-terday Ulen went after an Ice cream soda and Thomas after some medicine for I the reading of the letter of Hanna made him ill The publication of that letter has done more to disrupt the party in Utah than anything that could have been done said Thomas Well answered Glen stoutly if standing by the platform of ones party means disruption then its a poor party The news spread over the state yesterday yes-terday and from all parts deep xiires di f Yof r i sions of disgust are heard Logan says the few McKinley Republicans up there were fairly writhing Down at Provo the faithful were paralyzed The Enquirer printed the letter with no comment and is waiting1 to hear what the leaders of the McKinley faction have to offer before it I makes any declaration AT NEP11I I I The Ncphi correspondent of The Herald j says The publication of the Mark Hanna Han-na letter in The > Herald of totlar has I created consternation in the Republican ranks here Some of the prospective candidates i j can-didates for county offices who saw a i postiule chance to drop into oillce upon i I some son of a straddle < roohitloa are demoralized and crestfallen State Committeeman I Com-mitteeman Henry Adams exempliiies the j man who has had a wet blanket wrapped about his nude form and uses no uncertain uncer-tain English as to the kind of politics he considers the making public of such a letter at this time especially since he has been lying awake nignts evolving a series of resolutions which would combine the Mt Pleasant and Chicago platforms SILVER REPUBLICANS MOURN The Silver Republicans were depressed a bit yesterday too for they foresaw a I rush of votes to the Democratic ranks As one of them expressed himself This letter means there is no hope hir silver in the Republican party and fhc contention j which you folks have been making all i along is true 1 am almost persuaded to tfpe become a Democrat myself Presuming I that we elect our candluates for congres and elect a senator what good will be accomplished Our man will be against his party and will have no influence wl hit h-it If we have Democrats we will have men who although they may be In a minority will be working with some one for some end I understand Dave Keith has left us and announced himself as a Democrat More will follow Its hl This last expression had a mournful intonation in-tonation It sounded like the ring of a bell at the funeral of a child It vibrated resonantly then softly and finally died away in < L faint whisper akin to the sound of a clod falling on tho coffin ot dead hope The gentleman was grieved Quoting a leading Democrat who spoke yesterday But now that it is done what more could have been expected The contention con-tention of the Democrats has been that their party was the only friend of silver that within it lay the hope of the silver men They have argued that the Republican Re-publican party was the enemy of silver and in Its policies there was nothing to I expect by the friends of bimetallism The Tribune says that Mr Hanna has the i right to tender his advice as to the Republicans Re-publicans of this state but Mark dMnot tender it to Utah sjlone He said As chairman of the national committee charged with the duties of the position I protest against the Republicans or any state taking such action It is not Utah alone he is talking to but all the west and what goes in Utah goes In Idaho In Montana and everywhere He is speaking ex cathedra when he protests against any such action is taking to Renublicans in the name and by the authority of the Republican Re-publican party of the United States Mr Thomas declares he can see no reason why the party should not declare in favor of silver because it is in the our interests What interests The interests in-terests of the party or the people What good will it do to declare in the interests of silver except perhaps a fev votes maybe may-be caught And ws there anything else expected by Mr Thomas Of course not The Republicans planned to go into convention con-vention and declare for silver protection and reciprocity and go before the JJ t < 1 P < c with the same old yell which was used when Arthur Brown was elected senator A McKinley Republican declared the letter had wrought a bit of havoc in their ranks because the publication of the same I placed them where they could not get the support of the Tribune Had this letter I I been withheld he said we could have declared in favor of silver and the Tribune Trib-une which has been all ready to come I over to our side would have been with us As the matter now stands it is very I doubtful because we will not dare go back I on the head of the organization If we I stand together as a party we have got to support the administration in every particular par-ticular Otherwise we might as well join I the Democrats and light with them One is as bad as the other As your paper said I I a day ortwo ago we are in a heluva I fix REPUBLICAN COUNTY COMMITTEE I Mr Thomas and part of his county committee I I com-mittee met yesterday morning at 11 oclock and issued a call which will elect I delegates for the state convention to beheld be-held in this city on the 8th of next month I There will be no county convention the precinct primaries electing the delegates who will go direct There will be 125 delegates I dele-gates from this city and county The call for the convention tries to counteract the effect of the letter by Mr Hanna It declares de-clares for free silver protection and reciprocity re-ciprocity and in the same breath endorses the administration of Mr McKinley which is presumed to mean financial policy and all in fact must mean it as no exceptions excep-tions are made The call is for Friday evening Aug 26 and voting will begin at 8 oclock The basis of representation is one delegate for every ten votes cast for Chief Justice Zane three years ago 9 < > The Herald correspondent at Logan under date of yesterday says the Republican Re-publican count chairman and some of his aids have started an attack on Mr L R Martineau who has been mentioned in connection with a Democratic nomination nomina-tion The attack is said to be of a personal per-sonal nature the result of personal and political strife 4 > r The Tribune a few days ago quoted Hon Frank B Stephens as being in favor of fusion Jte Frank aSc gnn Mr Stephens said yesterday this was not het1 gYOf true I am in favor of fusion to this extent said Mr Stephens That I am for the election of a Democrat for United States senator I think all silver men ought to unite to this end and would favor giving some county offices to the silver Republicans and Populists but beyond be-yond that do not believe in the fusion plan as outlined |
