Show CHANCE F RSS1AN TRADE AMERICAN MANUFACTURERS WILL GET A SHARE But Mr Scott Found That the Russians Rus-sians Proposed to Manufacture Their Own Supplies Berlin Aug Correspondence of the Associated PressMr Irving M Scolt who is here with his son Lawrence Irving Scott a Cornell student stu-dent and accompanied by his physician physi-cian Dr George Chismore was seen at the Kaiserhoff by a reporter of the Associated Press and expressed himself him-self fully as to his trip to Russia Undertaken un-dertaken in behalf of the Union ironworks iron-works of San Francisco whose vice president and manager he is Mr Scott who is the builder of the battleship Oregon ot Admiral Deweys flagship the Olympia and of the Charleston and who showed the reporter re-porter letters of congratulation received re-ceived from Admiral Dewey Captain Chadwick of the New York and others on the splendid fighting and speed qualities of his vessels went to Russia Rus-sia where he stayed a month for several sev-eral purposes The main one was to ascertain on the spot the chances that America and more particularly San Francisco will have in supplying the region around the mouth of the Amoor river including Vladivostock and also Port Arthur with all sorts of river craft deep sea going vessels shipbuilding ship-building material railroad material etc Mr Scott spent a part of his time in St Petersburg and the rest at Moscow Mos-cow the manufacturing center of Russia Rus-sia and made a thorough investigation investiga-tion of the situation He said I found that vast and progressive region which is beginning to be known as East Russia along the Pacific and for which San Francisco is the nearest point of supply rapidly developing and I also found that the Russian manufacturers are alive to this fact and Russian Industry is remarkably progressive I was everywhere received re-ceived splendidly in Russia and found no prejudice against America or Amer lean manufactures but I did find a strong tendency on the part of the Russians to manufacture their own supplies and a vigorous encouragement encourage-ment on the part of the Russian government rnment to aid in this respect How ever Americans will have as good a chance as anybody in supplying Russia Rus-sia with those manufactures and supplies sup-plies which they cannot supply them elves as well and as cheaply Russia will build her own ships as far as they can and will purchase besides vessels ready made from other nations She has five large war vessels now build lag in St Petersburg There will be hough a chance for American manu acturers to supply certain articles As orAmerican ships he added I can say that in their performance they now stand at the very front and the capacity acity of the United States for build lag ships ranks second The warship of the near future so far as evolutions evolu-tions go will be a battleship of cruiser peed fully protected with heavy guns I and large coal capacity and also heavy Larmor All these features combined are possible in a warship and they will be combined better than hereto fore |
