Show A PRISONERS DARING JUMP He Is Sni oitMl to he Clarence Murphy Mur-phy Who Stole OOOO A man supposed to be Clarence Murphy Mur-phy who is wanted in Salem Mass for an embezzlement of funds from the Salem Savings bank estimated at an amount between 50000 and 60000 was arrested Friday afternoon He was taken to the new city hall and made a sensational jump for freedom from the window of the room Murphy had been a trusted employee of the bank in Salem Something over two years ago the directors of the bank became suspicious of Murphy and commenced com-menced an examination of his books They had not progressed very far when a number of discrepancies were found and Murphy was asked for an explanation explan-ation He professed to be able to give it and asked permission to go after some papers He did not come back It was learned that he went to a Window win-dow in the second story jumped to the ground got into a convenient team and made his escape He was next heard from in this city As Detective Chappelle was walking along the street about 2 oclock Friday afternoon he saw the man now supposed sup-posed to be Murphy standing on the street talking to a friend Chappelle stepped up to him asked him to walk as far as the Merchants exchange and there formally placed him under arrest He was handcuffed put into a hack and driven at once to the new city hall a in addition to the prisoner and Chap pelle Detective Egan was also in the room Ohappelle was standing in the doorway about fifteen feet from the prisoner who was still handcuffed He turned for a moment and quick asa as-a flash the manacled prisoner raised the window stepped out upon the wide ledge and jumped to the ground a distance or fifteen feet A few feet from the window but too far for him to reacts was the patrol wagon standing under a canvas cov red r-ed shed The prisoner evidently intended intend-ed to jump on this and then to the ground But he fell short and struck on his side and knees He was up again in a second just as Chapelle opened another window drew his pistol and ordered him to halt As the distance was growing greater between the two Chapelle fired a shot to intimidate the flying prisoner S > Fear lent him wings as he flew along the side of the building The firing of the pistol attracted a crowd and ia po liceman gave chase Brophy and Cha pelle rapidly gained upon him and he I was overhauled by Brophy and turned over to Chapelle after a few blocks He was at once returned to the de tectives rooms where a close watch I was kept upon him until he was later removed to the city prison While in I the detectives room the prisoner gave his name as Charles M Clarke put I declined to make any statement He claimed that it was a case of mis taken identity and that he would be able to establish this factSan Francisco J Fran-cisco Chronicle S |
