Show UNCOMPAHGRE TO BE OPENED House Concurs in the Amend I ment of the Senate MINERAL LANDS WILL BH RETAINED Powerful Influences That Had to Be Fought Indian Title Will Be Extinguished I I Except a to Allotted Lands Mr King Believes That Those Who I Have Located or May Locate After Af-ter April 1898 Will Be Protected I in Their Possession and Ultimately Ultimate-ly Given Title Special to The Herald Washington June 3 Today the question ques-tion of opening the Uncompahgrc reservation reserva-tion was finally disposed of The house concurred in the amendment adopted by the senate to throw open to settlement all lands on the reservation except the mineral lands which are to remain in government ownership The vote on this amendment was almost unanimous Mr King felt that i would be unwise to further prolong the fight for the mineral min-eral lands and accepted the result as the only compromise To The Herald sorre spondent Mr King said today I regret that we were unable to secure se-cure the passage of a law opening the gilsonlte lands immediately but a partial victory ha been won When we consider the powerful influences encountered the almost unanimous voice of the press against the measure to open the reservation reserva-tion the opposition of government officials daIs the efforts of the mighty leaders In the house who were determined to fasten the iniquitous system of federal royalties unon the people and commit with instructions the leasing of the lands to eastern office holders I feel that we have fairly succeeded Nothwithstandins all these forces a fair fight in the house would cess have brought I believe full suc Senators Rawlins and Cannon have been indefatiguible and deserve all credit Under the amendment the reservation will soon be opened and the Indian tItle extinguished except to alloted lands While the title to the Gilsonite lands remaIns j re-mains in the government1 believe those who have located or who may locate after April ISIS wjL be projected in their I possession and occupancy and ultimately 1 legislation titles will be nacted giving them I |
