Show CRAKE SIS AGAINST MORAll SENSATIONAL ARREST OF A THEOSOPHIST LEADER Henry J Foulke In Custody and Fifty Others of the New Club A Under Surveillance Chicago Nov 2A special to the Record from Onset Bay Mass says The arrest and casting into jail of Henry B Foulke who has posed as the leader of theosophists and spiritualists of this country has revealed an appall ing condition of affairs The charge against Fouikes is made by agents of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention Pre-vention of Cruelty to Children who avow that the investigations of a month past warrant the arrest of at least 50 others of the new cult here and they say that warrants will be applied for at once Foulke was taken in custody at his cottage here which had been the temple for the selfproclaimed theosophists The arrest was made by Officers B 1 Loring and E K Smythe of the complainant com-plainant society and the prison was driven to Wareham and locked up Later he was arraigned in court and pleaded not guilty and was bound over in 2500 bonds in default of which he was immediately removed to jail Mme Obelia Dis de Bar his associate in the management of the headquarters of the cult spent the latter part of the night and morning in scurrying around trying try-ing to secure bail but without success Thursday was the date set for the trial of Foulke Officer Loring the prosecutor says that the case is the worst which has ever been called to his attention Offi cer Smythe and myself he said have been spending a great deal of our time for more than a year obtain ing evidence and before we have dropped the matter a horrible state of affairs will be brought to light We have been watching Foluke and a number num-ber of other theosophists and spiritualists spiritual-ists at Onset Bay for a long time but not until last night were we ready to make any arrests When we decided on the move we went to the temple I and to our surprise we found that Foulke and Mme Dis de Bar had all I of their goods packed and were in readiness to leave the place We preferred pre-ferred only one charge against Foulke but we have sufficient evidence to convict con-vict him on three counts and will lay all of i before the grand jury I Foulke were the only person against whom we had the most startling evidence evi-dence of immorality the case would not be so bad but before we get through some 50 theosophists will be brought into court The news has made a sensation in I this section Some time ago theosophists theoso-phists renounced Foulke and refused to i I have anything to do with his beliefs or j his claims to leadership Since then he I has been working with Mme Dis deB i de-B r and other spiritualists to organize the new cut One of the plans in connection I I nection with the new movement was to open a sanitarium with accommodations I accommoda-tions for 300 patients He is a native of Philadelphia and at one time was a I real estate broker and lawyer with a practice paying 10000 a year which he gave up in 1891 to go into theosophy |
