Show INSTRUCTIONS TO DEWEY I I i Long Sent a Cablegram For the Commodores i Com-modores Future Guidance modores Futre I New York May 5A special to the Herald from Washington says Anticipating early communication with Commodore Dewey commander In chief of the Asiatic squadron Secretary Secre-tary Long sent to Hong Kong today along a-long cablegram containing instructions for the future guidance of the American I Ameri-can naval officer This message it is believed related to the plans made by this government for immediate dispatching dis-patching of troops to his assistance should he deem such action necessary Appreciating that a considerable i amount of the Ammunition of the American vessels has been expended Secretary Long has directed that a large quantity of shot and powder be sent to Manila in a steamer which will at once be chartered by the government govern-ment Considerable apprehension is felt in naval circles at the probability of a massacre of Spaniards in Manila by the insurgents who it Is believed aided Commodore Dewey in the capture cap-ture of the city Oppressed as they have been by the Spaniards the officers with whoir your correspondent conversed j con-versed said they had no doubt that as soon as they had the chance they would attempt retaliation Commodore j Dewey said one of these gentlemen I will undoubtedly the I I wi request commanding com-manding officers of the British German and French menofwar to land ma I i I rines to protect property of their respective I re-spective citizens So far as Manila is j concerned I have not the slightest I doubt that it is In the possession of I I the American force Manila proper I I was protected by a wall erected 300 I years ago and this wall was fortified I by some antiquated guns Having I placed Cavite under his guns the rest I of the workI mean by this the capture cap-ture of the city was a comparatively easy task and without doubt it was successfully performed by the courageous I cour-ageous American flag officer |
