GRANDSalt Lake has always al-ways had a fondness for melodrama and last evening when one of the best I of all melodramas The Shadows of a Great City was put on at the Grand there was considerably better than the usual Monday night gathering in attendance at-tendance Considering that the shadow is essentially a big stage play one that calls for revolving scenery moving boats portable prison walls etc the production was very creditable and reflected special credit on Stage Manager Man-ager Hatch who in addition to having hav-ing the heavy stage work on his shoulders shoul-ders made the principal acting hit in the part of the Jew There were of course a number of hitches unavoidable unavoid-able on the first presentation of so heavy a play and the waits between the acts spun out much longer than they will again Miss Bateman played with her accustomed sympathy and Mr Blake more had a fat part in Jim Farren one that suited well his peculiar style Mr Edwards as the villain and Mr I Kyle the hero both played with care and Miss Marshall while too quiet at times for an Ideal Biddy quite captured cap-tured the gallery The play is full of excitement and interest and should doa do-a good weeks business The new scenic work by Anderson deserves special mention 000 The advance sale for the Camilla Urso concert companys one night engagement en-gagement begins at the theatre this
