Show FIRE AND POLICE BILL COMMITTEES AMENDMENTS TO SENATOR SUTHERLANDS BILL The Mayor a Member of the Hoard Kxofiicio and the Oilier Mem hers to Be Appointed By the Governor Gov-ernor The house committee on municipal I corporations met last evening and per eoted its amendments to Senator Suther ands bill amending the present flre and police law The bill will ba reported to the house today As i will be reported it differs from the bill as it passed the senate in these particulars Tho mayor is made > a member mem-ber o the board exofficio the other members to be appointed by the governor FOenor of the state Instead of by the naycv and the council the present board being legislated out of office the first of April Apri The chiefs of departments and men are to be appointed by the council instead of by tIle board a before and the salaries ale < o be fixed by the council Instead of by the beard Whereas the bill as It passed the senate gave chiefs the power to dismiss without with-out filing charges and without stating cause the committee bill gives heads of departments power to dismiss upon good oausa which must be stated The chiefs dismissal however is not final the power being given the board to reinstate upon a vote of three members Three members may also suspend any chief O member of department without pay or may dismiss In all d c5 a public trial is provided for upon charges being made and any citizen may file such charges In all other respects the bill as t will reach the house conforms to the Sutherland measure a It passed the senate |
