one passes through the post on one of these beautiful summer evenings lib Is struck with the sounds of harmony that greets his cars from every side MinglIng with the soft rustling of the breeze among the branches of the trees comes the sweet strains ot a waltz played by one of the company orchestras From far down in the city conies the distant sounds of bolls to mingle In pleasing harmony with the low notes of the organ and voices of the cliolr practicing In the DOat chapel AH about the post is the sound of music of all descriptions and the low hum of voices with now and then a mcry ripple of silver laughter An evening at the post under such clrcurn stances could be nothing but pleasing indeed in-deed Friday the echoes of the rest were awakened by the sounds of tile trumpet blowing church call and nearly all the soldiers of the post turned out to do honor to the remains of the late Private Leo i Shlpinan of Company A Shlpman was a veteran of 30 years and three months service He had just been retired from active service when he was taken to the I post hospital where he departed from j this life The deceased was greatly liked and honored by all his comrades and it i was with deep regret that they heard I taps blown over his graved grave-d > < Friday morning the regiment was ordered or-dered out and a small nractice march was made which occupied the forenoon This took the place of the usual drill The band was the only organization left In the post except the hospital corps and the place was practically deserted during their absence i While the troops were absent from the post a lire broke out in the old sutler store which Is now used as a barracks for some of the men The band made a gallant run with the hose reel and were soon on the scene Within a very short time of the arrival of this Ptallent set of men the flames were completely quenched In the hurrr and excitement of the race with the cart Private Luther Johnson the crack cornet player of the band stumbled and fell The hose edit did not swerve from Its course for even this so the wheels passed over the prostrate form of the musician As a result he is limping about with the aid of a caneS < S > cane-S > < > The canteen Is I now In the full height of its summer business A full lire of summer goods has been added consisting of straw hats outing shirts all kinds of baseball goods tennis goods light confections con-fections and the Arctic soda fountain Is pushing the foaming lager hard for first place In popularity < > d > < > The Browns are practicing hard every day for their great game on the 20th Inst against the famous Park City team The Browns have Just received a challenge from th Evanston team for a came on Pioneer day but it will be impossible for the soldiers to accept It as some of the team belong to the band and that organl zation will take part in the festlltles of thu Jubilee on that day However arrangements ar-rangements will undoubtedly be made for a game between them on some other date 4 > < > < S > Yesterday the Browns placed a picket team from the city a practice came asa as-a part of their preliminary practice for the game on the fort grounds on the 20th v a j I Park City Is trying to make arrange j ments to have the regimental hand to I visit them on the Fourth of July and j take part In their celebration I I Regimental drills have now been started and are of frequent occurrence < a t The target range Is nearly reads for use The butts have been repaired and each one numbered with a largo figure i that can easily be read at nearly a thousand thou-sand yards distance The exact date of I the beginning of practice is not known I but it will be started Immediately upon the receipt of the new manual ot small arms practice which is now being printed
