Show 1 CHAMBER OFCOM1YLERCE Interesting Report Made at Last Nights fleeting DONNELLANS SUGGESTIONS CONSIDERED AT LENGTh BY A SPECIAL COMMITTEE To Arrange for Entertaining the Visiting Fire Chiefs A Letter from Senator Arthur Brown Home Industry Report on Finances Fin-ances At the meeting of the chamber of commerce last evening the following interesting report was read Salt Lake City May 3 1S96 To the President and Directors of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Gentlemen The undersigned to whom as a committee was referred the excellent communication of April 13th of Colonel John W Donnellan have given the contents of his letter careful consideration We feel that the thanks of the chamber specially and of the public generally are due to Colonel Donellan for his many excellent ex-cellent suggestions We only regret that no more of Salt Lakes citizens take the interest In the movements of the chamber of commerce which this zrentlftmnn < 1r > ps and thnt we do not I receive U more suggestions from the public pub-lic on subjects which are of such great interest to the whole community Still we hope to be able to discover many directions in which the efforts of the directors may be utilized to advantage ad-vantage We realize however that there are very many things which occur I oc-cur to the minds of active businessmen business-men which should have attention but which in the press of other duties might be neglected by the body of men who are however much they maybe may-be interested in the welfare of the city or the state apt to overlook such matters mat-ters We therefore take the liberty of urging the members of the chamber of commerce as well as those who are not yet connected with our body to give us the benefit of their ideas upon all matters of public importance assuring as-suring them that such recommendations recommenda-tions as they make will receive the consideration sideration which they merit We cannot think of anything that would be more profitable in advertising the wonderful resources of Utah than would be the proposed tour of our worthy secretary E F Colborn to the eastern states We realize that his long connection with the chamber of commerce and other business interests inter-ests of Utah his rare gift of eloquence and his remarkable memory of facts would enable him to present before the most intelligent audiences of the east the beauties and resources of our country coun-try in such a manner as to attract to our borders many wealthy intelligent and energetic people We cordally endorse the recommendation of Colonel Donnellan that an effort be made to secure means with which to send Judge Colborn east for a several months trip providing the gentleman himself finds it possible to so long leave his business without personal supervision We are pleased to know that congress con-gress has already appropriated 500 000 for the erection of a public building build-ing in Salt Lake City We recognize that this sum is inadequate for the needs of the state such as ours is and will soon become Yet we believe that this appropriation will be followed by others of sufficient size a the erection of our public building progresses to complete a building in Salt Lake City that Sal do credit to our government and to the state We therefore recommend recom-mend that after our congressional representatives rep-resentatives return home from the present sitting of congress that they be made acquainted with the necessities necessi-ties of Salt Lake City for a larger appropriation ap-propriation and that they be urged at the coming session of congress to secure an additional appropriation so that we may have at least from one to two million dollars wit which to complete the structure necessary We endorse with earnestness the recommendation that steps be taken for the selection of Fort Douglas asa as-a permanent military post We think it advisable to secure the names in such petition as may be necessary to I secure this some of the prominent offi cers or the fort Who will themselves recognize the desirability of this loc I tion We recommend that not only our congressional representatives be urged I to use their influence to effect this desirable de-sirable object but that the military officials themselves be requested to present pre-sent an application to the proper authorities au-thorities in Washington for such I appropriations as may be necessary to establish ermanent buildings and also to park the reservation itself I needs no argument to convince the residents of Salt Loke city and all visitors visi-tors who come here that no more beautiful park can be found in the world than that which might with the expentiture of suitable means be established on the bench to the east of the city We therefore suggest that our secretary correspond with the proper officials at Fort Douglas to obtain ob-tain their views as to the best method or accomplishing the objects sought the selection fo Fort Douglas as a permanent post and ithe parking of the military reservation Every citizen of Sal Lake can be impressed with the great advantage which would result t9 Salt Lake city by its selection as the headquarters of the Oregon Short Line and Utah Northern North-ern railway systems Special work will be necessary with the reorganization reorgani-zation committee and perhaps with the bond holders of these various lines which are to be consolidated in the reorganization We therefore recommend recom-mend the appointment of the following gentlemen as a committee to take his matter actively in charge F H Auerbach John W Donnellan John Dern Richard McIntosh and Thomas G Webber The sugar factory at Lehi has now established the fact that beet sugar can be produced in Utah at a profit I under any ordinary conditions We feel that the thanks of the community are due to those who have so unfalteringly unfalter-ingly and patriotically stood by that Institution during its days of adversity adver-sity and experiments We think no citizens of Utah are more impressed with the necessity of other factories in our state than are the gentlemen who are already connected with the Utah Sugar industry We therefore recommend recom-mend that before any communication Is had with gentlemen outside of Utah looking to the establishment of other factories that consultation first be had with the present directors of the Utah Sugar company com-pany They can perhaps establish another institution in some part of the state which their experience would enable them best to select We think however that this company should have the first opportunity of carrying out the measure proposed We therefore there-fore recommend the appointment of the following committee to consider this matter and take such action as they think the case merits J H Hughes Heber J Grant James G McDonald W S Henderson and Emanuel Kahn You committee feel that the agricultural agricul-tural college of Logan is but partially performing its duty in confining its cQnfning is operations op-erations alone to Cache valley We therefore think it desirable to have experimental perimental stations established at least in Salt Lake City or Utah county and in the extreme southern part of the state realizing that the tests made at these different places would give the citizens of Utah information which they cannot now obtain We recommend recom-mend that the matter be taken actively active-ly in charge by the chamber and recommend rec-ommend that the following gentlemen be requested to serve as a committee for that purpose Dr E D Woodruff Dr James E Talmage and Hon John R Winder whose energ and experience will doubtless doubt-less enable them to obtain from the board of directors of the agricultural agricul-tural college such concessions as that body feel that they have in their power pow-er to grant We realize that the chamber of commerce I com-merce might improve its location though we do not think it possible under un-der our present circumstances The building we occupy is somewhat removed re-moved from the main thoroughfare yet we think it receives a fair share of the attention of Interested visitors to our city The expense which would result from the selection of new quarters quar-ters would be greater however than we are in a oosition to bear and we therefore recommend the continued occupancy oc-cupancy of our present quarters at least until such time as our membership member-ship is increased greatly beyond what it now is We do not think it desirable at least for the present to establish a grain and produce exchange such as recommended recommend-ed by Colonel Donnellan We see many advantages which would result from such information as could thus be furnished fur-nished Yet the chamber of commerce has so many duties that we must urge the neglect of this feature for the present pres-ent We again express our views that the thanks of this chamber and the public are due to Colonel Donnellan for his timely suggestions and assuring the public that we desire to earnestly cooperate co-operate in any way to advance the interests in-terests of this body we remain very respectfully ABRAHAM H CANNON EDWARD H AIRIS LOUIS H FARNSWORTH Committee P SWe further recommend the most hearty and unqualified endorsement endorse-ment by the chamber of commerce of the movements now being made to construct con-struct railway lines to Deep Creek and the Pacific coast A communication from the fire and police commission asking that a committee com-mittee of three be appointed by the chamber to meet with a committee of the city council and fire and police board in the rooms old city hal at S p m this evening to arrange for the entertainment of the members of the convention of fire chiefs to be held in this city in August was read and Messrs Caine Grant and White were appointed FR OM SENATOR BROWN FlOlI > A letter from Senator Brown was read in answev to a request made by the chamber that he introduce a bill for the establishment of a United States assay office in this city In which he stated that he had complied with the request and had also embodied in the bill a provision for the establishing oIL a submint in connection and that i was now before the proper committee but could not come up before the next session of congress HOME INDUSTRY A letter from Stephen Tyne asking that a committee be appointed to arrange ar-range for a public meeting in aid of home industry was referred to E G Rognon Secretary Colborn submitted a carefully care-fully estimated report a to the finan Ices j Ices I-ces of the chamber the number of business busi-ness men and members who can be relied I lied upon for dues during the next quarter the number of doubtfuls and I the names C a very few of the most i prominent business men who declined I to longer lend their support to the 1 chamber However the number of j new members is gradually growing and I most of the old with the exception of a few are paying in their dies for the I ces quarter in advance so that the outlook I for the next six months is bright The meeting adjourned until next I Tuesday evening
