Show NOT A EST I Xo Money to Be Appropriated for I Sectarian Institutions i II I WASHINGTON April 8The Dis j trict of Columbia appropriation bill j recommitted by the house on account i of the aid carried by it to charitable I institutions was today considered by the committee and remodeled a far a i applied to private institutions All I items for private and semiprivate institutions in-stitutions which heretofore depended i largely upon the government for support sup-port were stricken from the bill In place of these appropriations a lump sum of 94700 equal to the total of the various items is added for the relief re-lief and care of poor and such charita ole and reformatory work as heretofore hereto-fore has been provided for by direct j appropriations to be expended by the district commissioners either under I contract or by employing the public institutions of the district The commissioners I missioners are required to render an account of their disbursements and I strict limitations are placed upon their powers The amendment ends with I this olause That no part of the money here appropriated shall be paid for the purpose of maintaining or aiding i aid-ing by payment for services or expenses ex-penses or otherwise any church or religious denomination or any institution institu-tion or society which 1 under sectarian I or ecclesiastic control I |
