Show UTAH REPUBLICANS AND PROTECTION PROTEC-TION The action of the various county Republican Re-publican conventions that have been held in Utah within a week past on the silver question and protection is truly I remarkable They have right along declared for silver as against protection protec-tion they have refused to accept the prime Republloan doctrine that the prosperity of the country has been owing to protection or that protection can completely restore confidence and prosperity I The Republicans of SevIer county held their convention Thursday and passed this resolution Resolved That we will not support the theory that by protective tariff alone the industrial wellbeing of the nation can be preserved but that we ask our representatives in conventions and in congress to link in their labors as they are linked in truth the union one and indivisible of bimetallism and protection It always has been the Republican doctrine that by a protective tariff alone the industrial wellbeing of the nation can be preserved And if at all acquainted with the history of their party the SevIer county Republioans must know this On this question of protection the Sevier county convention may betaken be-taken as representative of the party throughout the state The Republican party has never accepted the doctrine that bimetallism and protection necessarily neces-sarily go together Had it done so it would never have demonetized silver I i as It did In 1873 What Republican national I na-tional convention has ever declared that free silver Is essential to the prosperity pros-perity of the nation Is there a thinking thInk-Ing Republican in the state who believes be-lieves that the St Louis convention will come out tor free coinage There is small likelihood of even a straddle on the money question In that convention conven-tion such as the Ohio plank The financial plank will be as pronounced for gold as the Massachusetts is if its it-s not that identical plank When Republican conventions In Utah pass such resolutions as the one above quoted one of two things seems alnfost certain they are silver men first and Republicans afterwards or else they call themselves Republicans not knowing what Republicanism Is There Is no doctrine in the Republican party that can be made to taljQ precedence pre-cedence of protection Were our Republicans of Utah as good Republicans they think they are they would be commending Senator Sena-tor Arthur Brown for his vote on the Dingley bill and not Senator Frank I Cannon |
