Show CASSLDYS WYOMING CAR Flush With Money When He Entered the State I 1893 Cheyenne Wyo March 8While attempts at-tempts are now being made to drive the Robbers Roost gang of outlaws out of northwestern Colorado and corners cor-ners of Wyoming and Utah it may interest the public to recall the history of Butch Cassidy in Wyoming who is said to be the leader of this gang of npnprRtp outlaws Butch fassidv came into Wyoming about 1893 accompanied I by a desperate character known a Al Heiner They made their headquarters at Lander Fremont county and had some 8000 to 10000 in money which is now supposed to be the result of a bank robbery at Telluride Colo some months before They spent thIs money lavishly in the saloons of Lander and elsewhere in the state and made a great many friends among the tough element then living in west central j Wyoming In the latter part of 1833 or early in 1894 Cassidy and Heiner were arrested for horse stealing and vigorously prosecuted pros-ecuted at Lander by Judge Jay L I Towey the manager of the Embar Cattle Cat-tle company In the trial at Lander in I 1894 Homer was acquitted but Cas bidy was convicted under circumstances which entitled him to ten years in the penitentiary a the limit of the law I was feared at the time that a attempt at-tempt would be made to rescue Cassidy Cas-sidy before he could be taken to the penitentiary However much to the disappointment of the stockmen and law abiding citizens the Judge gave Cassidy only two years and he went quietly and unmolested to the penitentiary peni-tentiary at Laramie But before his short term had expired Governor Richards Rich-ards pardoned Cassidy and turned him loose upon the people of western Wyoming Wy-oming Leading citizens of western Wyoming reproached the governor for his act but the governor claimed that ac gvernor the petition that he had received justi fed him in the pardon Butch Cassldys career since getting out of the Wyoming Wyom-ing penitentiary has been that of a desperado who has made nothing but care and expense for the officers of I western counties |
