Show NEWS OF THE WEST Fight For Utah Cattle Denver Republican One hundred thousand head of the finest stock cattle in the country are in the southern part of Utah the owners of which are preparing I pre-paring to ship them to the markets of the country to be sold to feeders as soon a the ranges of the north are green The problem that is now confronting con-fronting the cattle men in Denver is whether or not this market will get its Just share of these cattle The cattle are located on the ranges about half way between the lines of the Santa Fe and the Rio Grande Western railways I the cattle go over the San ta Fe road none of them will come to the Denver market and i they go to the Rio Grande Western all of them will come to the Denver market Of the two roads the Rio Grande Western is closest to the range country and usually usu-ally gets the bulk of the trade but this year the Santa Fe road is inthe field for the business and has made a rate which will without doubt attract most of the cattle business unless the rate met by the Rio Grande Western and the Denver Rio Grande roads The Santa Fe road recognizing that the rival road was in a position to handle han-dle the cattle has made a big reduction in its rates and this reduction has not yet been met by the Rio Grande The time for moving the cattle has not yet come but 1 the cut is not met before then this market will handle about 75000 cattle less than it should The 7500 catte former rate from Flagstaff and Canyon Diablo both In Arizona to Kansas City was 125 a car but a week ago the Santa Fe road announced that this rate would be reduced from 125 a car to 94 a car and a difference of 31 a car in freight rates will be enough to attract the cattle men of the country where the cattle are feeding now The cattle have to be driven from the ranges to the railroads and cannot be started until the ranges are green enough to feed the stock while en route The drive to the Colorado line is shorter short-er and easier than the drive south into Arizona but at that season of the year the cattle man can afford to spend the extra time necessary to drive his cattle a few miles farther If he can get a reduction duction in his freight rates of 31 The cattle going over the Santa Fe road go straight to the market at Kansas City I they are hauled by the Rio Grande Western they come to the Denver Den-ver market Montana Joe Short and Frank Lacey two Moose lake miners died very suddenly from some mysterious Illness and two others are in a serious condition I is supposed they died from the
