Show We hope the legislature does not intend in-tend to adjourn without taking some action whereby men accused of crime and waiting trial where not out on bonds shall not be held in the penitentiary peni-tentiary No matter with what crime they may be charged nor how strong the evidence against them appears to be they are to be considered innocent until proven guilty Now to hold a man who is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a penitentiary with convicts men whose souls are often black with crime is a great wrong in fact it is an encouragement to crime Then if the man so held is discharged because not guilty he has put upon him the stigma of having been in the penitentiary pen-itentiary a stigma far greater than that of having been held in a county jail No laving prisoner should ever be held I in a penitentiary who has not been convicted of a felony This is an important im-portant matter and one that should not be allowed to go over until another legislature meets |
