Show SWEETS OF FREEDOM TASTED BY A PRISONER FOR A MINUTE ONLY Hnvlnjr Served a Term of Years For Counterfeiting He ii Released Only to Be Hooked For the More Serloni Crime of Murder NEW YORK March 21The Herald this morning says J W Dearmond alias Charles Rica Ric-a rather quietlooking young man who has just completed a term of two years and six months imprisonment in the Kings county penitentiary for counterfeiting has been arrested on a charge of murder at the prison Dearmond who went by the name of Rice when convicted of counterfeiting counterfeit-ing before the United States court at Shreveport was received at the Crow Hill penitentiary on August 3 i 1894 He gave his age as 24 years and his occupation I oc-cupation as a farmer The second arrest of Dearmond or Rice was made upon a warrant issued by United States Commissioner Morley at the request of Assistant United States District Attorney Roy He is neld on a requisition from the district attorney of Paris Tex under an in dictment found on May 26 1891 by the United States grand jury for the eastern district of that state for being concerned with others in the murder of Edward Howett a wealthy cattle dealer The warrant was executed by Deputy Marshals McManus and Koch Dearmond was remanded to jail at I the request of Mr Roy and the examination ex-amination set down for Friday next by Commissioner Morley to await the arrival ar-rival of the federal authorities from Texas with the Indictment and proof of the identity of the prisoner I THE STORY OF THE MURDER as recounted by United States Marshal J S Williams of the Indian Territory is seemingly strongly circumstantial against the accused Edward Howell who was interested in the cattle business busi-ness had determined with other citizens citi-zens of Pickens county I T to rid that sEcUon of a gang of desperate characters In pursuit of his intention inten-tion he incurred the deadly enmity of the desperadoes He was called to the door of his house on the night of January 6 1891 and six of the men who confronted him demanded his money which he refused to give them He was immediately imme-diately riddled with bullets and his j murderers then rifled his pockets and ransacked the house The horse and > I cattle thieves who committed the crime arp said to have been Frank Jones alias Frank Schuck Will Brillson J D Dearmond and three others Two were captured and lynched Dear mond escaped to Louisiana and the three other men were arrested and dealt with according to law In Louisiana Dearmond is said to have connected himself with a PARTY OF COUNTERFEITERS and while engaged in the business he fell into the clutches of the United States secret service officers He was tried before the United States circuit court and sentenced for counterfeiting to the penitentiary under the name of Charles Rice by which name he was known to the authorities Marshal Charles Williams of the eastern district dis-trict of Tennessee who has been unremitting un-remitting in his search for Dearmond obtained evidence that led him to be i IPVO that Convict Rice and the object I of his search were one and the same man Having decided that he was on the right track he addressed a letter I to arden Hyes a few days ago in which he said that he believed that Dearmond was in the Kings county penitentiary The marshal gave a description de-scription of Dearmond and Warden Hayes upon making a personal inspection inspec-tion of the federal prisoners who were under his charge soon found that the appearance of Convict Rice in all particulars par-ticulars corresponded wtth the description descrip-tion he had received l of the man that is wanted for the murder of Howell Rice denied that his name was Dear mond and he disclaimed all knowledge knowl-edge of the charge against him |
