Show NEWS FROM I r NEARBY TOWNS t Elder Gibbs Monument to be Dedicated Tomorrow WAS ERECTED AT PARADISE t ok KILIED FOURTEEN YEARS AGO IN TENNESSEE f Two Weddings at Logan A Dnugh ter of Dr Ormsliy Daiigerou 111 Judge HIgglns Holds n Short SCII don of Court at aronnAI1 Old Wool Case Revived LOGAN May 14 Saturday May 23 189G will be a memorable day In the history of this valley On that day will be dedicated the monument to the Mormon martyr Elder John H Gibbs who was murdered in Tennessee while in the performance Of his duties as a > missionary fourteen years ago The monument will oe erected on the grave of the dead hero at Paradise where his remains were interred Eider B H Roberts who by strategy and disguise dis-guise succeeded in securing the body of Elder Gibbs which was in the hands of the Tennessee mob and brought it home will deliver the memorial address ad-dress A number of brass bands will make solemn music for the occasion and the dedicatory prayer will be pronounced pro-nounced in the afternoon In the evening a concert will be given for the benefit of the Gibbs monument fund at which the leading talent of the state will contribute to the entertainment enter-tainment Such artists as Miss Maud May Babcock R C Easton H S Goddard George W Pyper and J M Wilson have consented to donate their services for the worthy cause The monument is a beautiful shaft of marble splendidly executed by P O Hanson sculptor of this city It is a credit to the designer and will stand as a fitting memorial to the faith and bravery of Elder Gibbs who offered un his life in the cause of his maker The fund for the erection of the monument mon-ument has been in the hands of the Cache stake superintendent of the Young Mens Mutual Improvement associations as-sociations for some time past and although al-though hard times have been the cry and against the well known difficulty in securing contributions for such put poses a very considerable sum has been raised to defray the expenses of the monument Considerable remains however yet to be paid and the idea of the concert is to raise means to help pay the deficiency A large attendance at-tendance at the dedieatiort is antici pat ul the date for the stake conference confer-ence of young men occurring upon the same day and that following May 23 and 24 Little Agnes the twoyearold child of Mr and Mrs C E Thorstensen of the south ward this city died Sunday Sun-day evening She had been suffering for many days with a complication of infant complaints Funeral services were held over the remains Tuesday in the Seventh ward meeting house Beautiful Beau-tiful and profuse floral offerings were sent by relatives and friends from Salt Lake Brigham and this city Appropriate Appro-priate remarks were made by Elders J E Hickman John T Caine jr and President Orson Smith Mrs F S Richards of Salt Lake a member of the Agricultural college I board was in town this week Ben E Rich formerly editor of the I defunct Idaho Silver Hammer passed through Logan Wednesday Sibyl l the 12yeirold daughter of Dr and Mrs O C Ormsby has been very seriously ill with neuralgia of the heart Monday and Tuesday her life was despaired of and while now somewhat some-what better her condition is exceedingly exceed-ingly critical John Kranenbuhi died in this city on Monday last of stomach troubles He was 65 years old and leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss Sheriff Turner went out Wednesday and arrested a man just this side of the Idaho line for stealing sheep A small blaze from the chimney of P A Nielsens store brought the fire department de-partment out Tuesday The fame was soon extinguished with no damage done 1 he following programme will be rendered ren-dered at the meeting tomorrow night of the Philomathic society of the Brigham Brig-ham Young college Instrumental music Harry Farr and Ale Xibley Lecture The Trial of Christ Prof James A Langton RecitationMiss Nina McCann I Song Miss Bessie Morehead Business will be suspended on the afternoon af-ternoon of Saturday May 23 the occasion II occa-sion of the dedication of the Gibbs monument Two weddings occurred in this city last evening The high contracting parties are ah well known young people peo-ple in this community Upon this occasion occa-sion Mr H Fullmen of Providence and Miss Annie Christiansen were united and held a reception at the residence of the brides parents on the Island Samuel Blanchard and Miss Dagmar lIss Dgar Christiansen also became man and wife I and a reception it is said will be given in honor of the event this evening I |
