HSoon after 2 oclock Chairman Howbert of the state Republican committee called the nearly near-ly 800 delegates to order and the convention con-vention was formally ODened by singing sing-ing America accompanied by a military tary band After the reading of the call the following communication was read from Senator Wolcott I I am too good a Republican to wish to create any division of my party in I Cfalorado and too much concerned for the success of bimetallism and the I great principles of the Republican party to do So under any circumstances Dr John T Gross of Trinidad was unanimously chosen temporary chairman chair-man on the suggestion of A M Stevenson Steven-son of Denver delegate to St Louis from the first congressional district In taking the chair he arraigned the Democratic party for its incapacity He appealed to the convention to be I firm to tor bimetallism and protection and to REMAIN WITH THE MANY I l of the land and not of the few In conclusion he saidand the sentiment was cheered to the echoLet us send delegates to St Louis who believe that bimetallism stands head and shoulders above every other issue in the coming I campaign and by all means let us send Henry M Teller at the head of the delegation Frank D Smith of Arapafroe county was chosen temporary secretary and Paul Wilson of Pueblo and W D Todd of El Paso assistants A credentials committee of one delegate dele-gate from each county was chosen There were contests in Arapahoe and Kiowa counties but Arapahoe got representation rep-resentation forTH for-TH RING before it was noticed Kiowa was ruled I I put but Arapahoe managed to keep I its man after some lively word sparring I spar-ring A recess was taken to 4 p m and I then extended to 730 I was nearly 9 oclock when the committee I com-mittee on credentials presented its report re-port seating the Stevenson delegation from Arapahoe The report was adopted adopt-ed without discussion by the convention conven-tion though the committee had a stormy session for four hours I I While awaiting the committees report I re-port an effort was made to pass in the convention the resolutions adopted by I I the second district convention this I morning I failed utterly I I Alter the appointment of the commit I tsc on resolutions there wa a dreary I wait until 1115 before the committee was ready to report Its deliberations were I held behind closed doors but it may be said that the PRINCIPAL BONE OF CONTENTION I was Senator Wolcott The resolutions a adopted are lengthy but in them Senator Wolcotts name is not mentioned and his course is commended only in star s-tar as the Republican representatives In congress are indorsed in one paragraph by wholesale blessing In the resolutions Senator Teller is I I made the leader of the Colorado delegation dele-gation and no instructions are given I the delegates except to follow his leadership In the first paragraph it is declared that bimetallism and protection are vital I vi-tal to the prosperity of the country that Oriental competition would render competton protection I pro-tection futile with the gold standard Democratic free trade and the gold standard are declared to be the cause of a destruction of values onehalf Bond issues are denounced and the blame for financial conditions is put upon the Democracy The money plank reads We therefore declare tha the free coinage of silver and gold at a ratio of 16 to 1 is for the time now being of I paramount and controlling importance and the most pressing question connected with our political duty and acton The I I doctrine of bimetallism has never been I denied by any national Republican convention con-vention but often asserted and they who now deny it are FALSE TO THE PARTY and not we who still maintain it International Inter-national bimetallism can only be achieved through national bimetallism adopted by I the United States To the maintenance I of this principle as well as to the restoration re-storation of silver as a money metal I to the full standard of the constitution we as Republicans i pledge our most I arduous and persistent effort Restriction of immigration is favored a is also a discriminating duty in favor I of American bottoms for the protection I of American shipping The Democratic I pension policy is denounced The state I I administration is endorsed and Senator t Teller is commended in most laudatory I I terms in the longest paragraph in the resolutions for his championship of silver ver in congress and he is declared be the ablest living exponent of the true principle of American finance and the most fearless and intelligent advocate I in public life of the financial system which will best promote the comfort and prosperity of the whole people and the whole world INSTRUCTIONS The only instructions given are these That the delegates selected by this convention are hereby instructed to act in harmony with the views of the Hon Henry M Teller as to the national convention I con-vention and that Senator Teller is hereby selected as a delegate and appointed to lead the delegation at the St Louis convention vention The resolutions were adopted with a shout and balloting for the remaining three delegates at large was begun The remaining delegates at large are Frank Goudy Denver J W Rocke fellow Gunnison and James Downing Aspen The convention is now at 130 a m a listening to speeches by delegates but will soon adjourn I |
