Show 0 w > w i HYMN 2 r j JII f DHY Freely rendered from the Spanish for The Herald by Prof Paul M Schofleld professor of the Spanish language in the ugh schooL I I wish to show to thee dear reader I thing of beauty a fullblovn rose AVlyit Is more beautiful See with what modest confidence I rises over its stalk of green moss appearing queen of all the flower world its leaves as color of lire the air redolent with its fragrant balm breathing what 0 dellghtto our eyes and our senses How It refreshes the spirit The rose IS i beautiful but how much more so Is he who has created i Would you like to know what iR i strong The lion is strong when coming out of his lair ho shakes his crested mane when he makes the forests echo with his roarings and terrifies away thus all the other nnlmals IIo san tear them and devour them in a moment He Is strong terrible but ha who has created the lion Is stronger strong-er still The sun Is majestic when It shines In the blue heavens and sends Its warm rays down to our earth I Is the work of our God tho most perfect which the human I mind can conceive i Is splendid magnificent magnifi-cent and allfructfyinK but the creator of the great orb of day Is much more mortal eyes cannot see him face to face for his splendor Is too brilliant and overpowering over-powering for the w aknes of our human sight He penetrates with his light the depth of the deepest darkness all his works aro tIed and resplendent with his light lightWhat What nama shall we give to the great being who has created all this and who Is 11 cli lh aJe l superior to is all his creatures This groit beins Is God He who governs gov-erns the world and regulates the movements move-ments Of all things which compose it from the star yonder which shines In the firmament to the delicate tower or to the grain of sand which goes rolling beneath our feet In him alone It Is true dwell beauty power wisdom and perfection Now see the sun has sank In the west the night has descended over the earth the hot air has begun to cool The flowers close their colored leaves and Incline their heads on their delicate stalks Daylight is I fast waning The chickens are resting asleep beneath the wings of their mother and the mother also sleeps tranquilly The birds have censed to feed and sleep with theIr heads tucked under one of their wings Neither the confused voices of the children at play nor Che steps of those who come and go are any longer heard Tho bees do not buzz around the hive nor among tho flowers of the mother forest They have already finished their task all work has ceased In ths cell where they rest so peacefully The sheep repose on their soft fleece and I the hills no longer resound with their bleating The hammer of the blacksmith does not reverb on the anvil nor the saw creak beneath the hand of the carpenter The I people fatigued with labor recline drowsily drows-ily In bleep and the young chickens rest I In this bosom of the mother Darkness covers the earth and the heavens The eyes of all are now closed all sleep In I nature Tell me who Is I this who takes care of all these sunk in sleep and without de lease Not only I s r they In the arms of Mother Nature A beneficent e always al-ways open yes such an eye which penetrates pene-trates tho deepest darkness to the bottom of the abyss as well as In tho clearest light When the sun dots not Illuminate and the moon does not reflect his light when no star can send Its rays through the thick clouds an eye from which nothing i noth-ing is hidden It Is vigilant over the great geat families of the vast universe and this eye is i the eye of our heavenly father His hand protects us without ceasing Innd He has made sleep wherewith to regain our bodily strength after the fatigues of the day and he has given for us the night that we may sleep with rest In the same manner that a mother walks about the house and examines it with finger put on Up to keep from the baby all that would disturb his sleep and I draws the curtains carefully around his bed fearful lest some sudden light might I open his eyes thus also God envelops us I In a thick veil and extends around us silence and tranquility In order that his creatures may repose In calmness and security Laborer and you all refresh your strength with sleep exempt from noise Youths and others also insects who hum through the air sleep with peace Be not afraid God your heavenly father watches you all for he never sleeps You are able to close the eyes In security for the dear Lord always watches over and protects you His holy light shines upon Just and unjust upon good and bad and those who put their trust In him shall never be confounded When then the darkness of the night U r has disappeared and the rays of the rising sun call us again to our labors before ye begin the dally work forget not nor neglect to praise God who has cared for you while you slept Let not birds let not tho very flowers reprove you Ye renew O birds your songs in awaking and also you flowrs open spread your leaves and exhalo your fragrance to glorify God the creator |
