Show THE LOGIC OF IT The logic employed in the defence of the present county selectmen is simply excruciating It is this The county attorney has been spending spend-ing a large portion of the publics time in hunting up evidence so as to hunt down the former selectmen therefore the cresent selectmen ought to be fully supported no matter how much they may charge for per diem and mileage The county attorney succeeded in prevailing upon an employee of the Chicago furniture firm that had Hay ken for an agent to betray his employers em-ployers and abstract letters from their office to > be photographed for the county attorneys purpose Therefore There-fore nothing ought to be said about the high charges made by the present selectmen for alleged services as road and bridge inspectors Suspicion has been fastened upon the former selectmen as boodlers therefore the present selectmen are beyond criticism and above reproach Hayken the agent who made the furniture deal with the old county court has been indicted therefore all the money drawn by the present selectmen from the public treasury was legitimately taken I The county attorney trapped Hay ken when he arrived here as a witness wit-ness and kept him confined from conferenc with counsel in hopes of intimidating him into some kind of a confession therefore no Inquiry should be made into the doings of that attorney at-torney or the present county court Alleged copies of letters said to have been written by Hayken show either that former county officials were bribed or that Hayken drew money from his firm to place where it would do the most good and so put it into his own pocket therefore to expose the exorbitant claims of the present county officials is shameless abuse The presumption is that the ex selectmen were induced to pay big prices for county furniture therefore the exposure of excessive approprIations appropria-tions for themselves by the selectmen now in office is hunting them with fury and venom The whole trend of that sort of reasoning is that the selectmen of this year must not be found fault with whatever they may do because the selectmen of last year are accused of boodling Let it be understood that the selectmen select-men now in office commenced their high claims for mileage and per diem as soon as they had a chance at the public purse and at once The Herald published the particulars giving figures and facts from the public records re-cords That was before any evidence was obtained as to the alleged doings of the formgV county court While stojppink the payment l of warrants war-rants for PPir services rendered the ij county last year the selectmen and county attorney took good care to draw largely for their own emolument This went on from month to month until it became a public scandal And now their organ and whitewasher the Tribune announces that because of the arrest of Hayken and the fastening fasten-ing of suspicion upon certain exof ficials for past transactions the present pres-ent moneygrabbers and fee fiends are fully vindicated Such is the logic by which a Republican Republi-can paper attempts to establish the angelic innocence of Republican officials of-ficials who are feathering their nests at the public expense and making hay while the sun shines regardless of the burdens thus imposed on the taxpayers and the impoverished condition of the county finances |
