of the active stocks are down more than a small fraction Sugar which was most prominent In the transactions was offered freely in the early dealings but found ready buyers During the day however the sellers became far more numerous than the buyers and the stock gave way under pressure The stock receded re-ceded in the opening trading rose 1 fell off 1 closing about the lowest low-est and 1 down Electric and Westinghouse compan ies the fact is that while commJjtees were appointed by the corporations to negotiate for the maintenance of prices etc no meeting or these com mdttees has been oed as amount involved aggregating about 2000000 tons By far the greater part of this was taken by leading Chicago interests inter-ests the balance being by smaller purchasers pur-chasers So far as can be learned the principal PittsLurg producers the Wheeling Wheel-ing furnaces and the makers in the valleys val-leys have not yet taken hold The sales covered were Norris at 290 Ashland at 3 and Chapin S3 One feature In connection I con-nection with these transactions is the fact that the det guarantee against a decline L de-cline i det mining companies covers cov-ers cnly the particular grade of ore sold at the price made Buyers of pig iron and of ste1 art holding off to await developments de-velopments They show little disposition 10 pay 10 In the valley for Bessemer pig Iron and 1550 for soft steel billets in l > it bur figures which represent the market today Sales have been very light and i is only from Chicago that a fair tonnage of billets is reported in the eastern east-ern markets Prices are below the equivalent equiv-alent of the Pittsburg quotations as the active competition from that quarter is withdrawi for the present There is a more hopeful feeling In the nished iron and steel markets although it Is more m anticipation of better things t t come than in any actual realization of better prices Really very little large business bus-iness has been done rd what is going on
