Show A BARBER HAS A FINE TO FAY It COt Him 15 to Refuse to Cutn NcsrroH Hair i I cost a Cambridge barber 15 for refusing fusing to cut a colored mans hair The case was heard before Judge Almy in the Cambridge district court Tho plaintiff was a young colored man 4 named Lewis a brother and ward oC r W H Lewis the famous Harvard football foot-ball player Lewis the elder who won honors at the Harvard law school as I well as on the field was in court and sat by the side of the plaintiffs counsel coun-sel The defendant was Barber Ferdi nand Hautz He is a typical German and his son Charles Hautz works for him The case was not without Its amusing side I Young Lewis the aggrieved testified that he called at Hautzs barber shop a week ago Saturday night and asked for a hair cut The barber turned him away telling him that there were other barber shops handy and that ho J was busy Lewis went away and returned re-turned later in company with another colored fellow Still no satisfaction was obtained The barber claimed that when Lewis I made his first visit to his shop he dfd not ask for a hair cut but simply made n motion to that effect by running his fingers through his hair When he returned I re-turned the second time it was nearly 1 oclock and he did not want to work any more that night I Counsel for the barber intimated that the affair was a put up job and that Lewis the elder was behind it all The ° ourt replied that it did not matter iC I he was and so Hautz was lined 15 lie paid Boston Transcript |
