Show A CHARACTERISTIC REPORT Our unesteemed morning contemporary is very anxious to have a division in the Democratic ranks Persons connected ed with it have been trying to foment strife between two or three prominent Democrats and The Herald and imagine they have succeeded That is i proclaimed as a terrible split and what that paper earnestly desires is asserted as a matter of fact There is simply nothing in it worthy of public mention As the convention is drawing to a close some gentleman greatly respected respect-ed in Democratic circles thought it wise to get the Democratic delegates dele-gates together before leaving for their homes in distant parts of the territory terri-tory that good feeling might be promoted pro-moted and that harmony be maintained maintain-ed which is essential to party success suc-cess A meeting was held on Friday night which was private and in which no Republican had tie right to intrude Matters were discussed freely which were of interest to the party and the result was a clear understanding on the principles necessary to be adhered toby i to-by all members of the Democratic I party It was not a convention nor a formal party meeting of any kind but simply a friendly gathering of a few Democrats Demo-crats for a confidential and frank ex Dression of opinion The result was gratifying in the extreme although matters were discussed from opposite points of view The Herald would have made no reference to it because it was a private I pri-vate affair but for the garbled and mixed up mess which appeared in Saturdays Tribune purporting to be a report of the meeting which is described describ-ed as a Democratic Quarrel It is one of the worst specimens of Tribune inaccuracy in-accuracy that has appeared for some time and is a sample of the recklessness reckless-ness of that paper when anxious to appear ap-pear informed on subjects and occurrences occur-rences that it knows nothing about It is not true that Mr Hansen ot the News requested to be allowed to remain or that he made any remarks whatever It is not true that Judge Powers or The Herald was attacked by Mr Sloan or that he said the party was without an organ I It is not true that Judge Powers replied re-plied to Mr Sloan in a scathing or other effort It is not true that any gentleman present complained of encountering difficulties in securing insertion in The Herald of any matter editorial or otherwise It is not true that either Mr Richards or Mr Miner intimated that some of the Gentiles present were acting ir bad faith or that they were likely to desert the Democratic party It is not true that any one connected with The Herald opposed the resolutions resolu-tions It is not true that accusations and epithets were freely exchanged It is not true that the basis of the resolutions adopted were anything like what theTribune states The truth of the Tribune article is i like the truth of the description of the crab as a red fish that crawls backwards back-wards The crab is not a fish it is not red and it i I does not crawl backwards That paper scarcely ever fails to mix and mingle truth and error in such proportions pro-portions that it is difficult to tell tother from which But in this case it has taken one or two facts and surrounded them with such a cloud oh I falsehood that the truth is completely obscured It is like the niggers two grains of wheat in three barrels ol chaff The effects of the meeting will be and are to promote mutual good feeling feel-ing to cause Democrats to unite on common ground to banish the terms Mormon and Gentile in political parlance par-lance to resist improper influences in politics and to help out the party in good trim for the campaign which is Immediately before us The Tribune would do better by trying to establish harmony in Republican ranks than in efforts to fabricate contentions which do not prevail in the Democratic party |
