Show WANTED TO SKIP BUT A WARRANT FOR EMBEZZLE 1IE DETAIXS HER Mrs Whalen a Dressmaker Under Arrest on a Serious Charge Did Not Pay Her Help Alleged That She Has Disposed of Valuable Goods Satisfied that she had worked Salt Lake city for all there was in sight Mrs E Whalen last night determined to seek pastures new and would nave succeeded had it not been for Sergeant Frank Wire and his little warrant Mrs Whalen is a woman who for a short time has conducted a dressmaking dressmak-ing establishment on East Third South street near the Trewhela block No ordinary establishment was hers but one employing from five to a dozen girls according to the volume of business I busi-ness transacted A combination of circumstances led to Mrs Whalens arrest One was that yesterday was pay day but from Mrs Whalens actions the young women became be-came suspicious that the ghost ws not going to walk a usual However she promised to pay off at 7 oclock and up to that hour they waited As she failed to appear and certain arti ales of dress goods belonging to customers cle cus-tomers were not in the places where I such articles are usually they communicated com-municated with Mr Albert Hirz one I of the patrons who notified the police the A watch was kept at the depots impression being tbat the woman I would go south and in the meantime i a warrant charging her with embezzlement i I embez-zlement was obtained from Commissioner Commis-sioner Pratt Sergeant Wire haunted I the Rio Grande Western depot until the 1135 train and was about to give I 13 gve I up the chase when just as the bell was ringing he saw madame and her son approach from the opposite side and quietly slip into a coach I Both were brought to the police station sta-tion When confronted with Mr Hirz tan Wen I she gave vague and unsatisfactory replies re-plies When searched her purse was found to contain 2030 Of course in the absence of a police matron the search was not a rigid one but she will be thoroughly overhauled today I to-day by a competent woman Her son was also searched but nothing was found upon him and he was permitted to leave As he departed de-parted his ma admonished him say ing I have got a word < to say to you Talk ito no one and answer no questions tions Mrs Whalen had no baggage whatever what-ever nor checks for baggage which leads the police to believe hat she has shipped her trunk on ahead The only thing In the way of portable port-able articles was a box containing a few expensive articles such as a costly night dress hemstitched handkerchiefs handker-chiefs and like articles which await identification She will be given a hearing today |
