In the Filteeuth AVard i The Sn Francisco Examiner has apparently ap-parently opened up on the Utah campaign cam-paign A short time ago it sent a man here to look into the situation and he spent a great deal of his time looking Into the Trumbo side of it The idea was spread abroad by the Trumbo crowd that the next move on the pro gramme would be the opening up of warire by the Examiner In the is EI f > of Tuesday morning appears the foit wing article which is written in siich a manner as to lead one to be lien that it is merely introductory a id simply paves the way for something some-thing stronger Colonel Isaac Trunibo will knovn in California where he has spent most of His time during the last few years is engaged en-gaged ia a hot political lieht in Itah just novi one of Colonel Trumbo enterl the fight for a senatorshio very p rlv and has boon hard at work for months His first efforts I ef-forts were quiet but now the tight is on the open and every battery is belching The growth of his boom has led to the making of a very bitter personal attack upon him by the Salt Lake Tribune the wading Republican u wf > papcr of the ter tory The editor of the Tribune Judge c Goodwin is himself a candidate TS the Senatorship fact which Trum I boSs followers declaim is the rea reason for the Tribunes antiTrumbo ghl Goodvrln Campaign Judge Goodwin opened lire on the colonel very rccenl in a lone leader headed For a Clean Campaign in the course of which i was openly charged that Trimbo was seeking to get into the Senate Sen-ate by the lavish and corrupt use of money and that h ° na < l formed a dishonorable dishon-orable alliance with Charlie Crane a alance of Utah Cra is candidate l for governor 17tah Cr chairman of the Republican territorial committee and as such is kniwn to be using ommltep party machinery for old o-ld himself h < = noe the Tribune demanded demand-ed that he resign the chairmanship or withdraw from the Candidacy This leader produced consternation among Republicans Jroduc publicans for of cour Trimbo could not be bluffed into withdrav in front the light lt and Crane has manifested no disposition dispo-sition ad change hi course or Tribune The scheme of Charlie Crane and Isaac Trumbo can only succeed after the people and debauched of Utah have been corrupted bauched Will the people allow themselves them-selves to be corrupted and debauchee The people of this territory should not fail to recognize that the coming state election is the most tmportant they have held It lies with them to say whether Utah shall start on her career as a state of the union with a fair fame or a name blackened with infamy and corruption reached the crossroads The people have crossoads and must make their choice That Cleveland SpeeelJ One of the amusing features of the row is the discussion going on as to the part played by Colonel Trumbo in the silver convention at Cleveland The Cleveland World publishes an elaborate report of the work of the convention and represented repre-sented that the colonel was its leading spirit Among other attentions paid him In tho World was a lengthy report of a speech which it declared he delivered Ipeeh at a meeting of the committee on resolutions resolu-tions The meeting was executive but the transom of the room in which it was held Impugned to be open and a reporter acconKngly gave verbatum a speech mado by the colonel a speech which the World represented as eloquent and stirring stir-ring to say the least The this press report of the colonels activity and proml 1 repor the wires to the pence was sent over peo WB of Utah And now comes the Tribune Ttfith a letter written Judge Goodwin from Cleveland the day after the Worlds re pcrt The letter the judge says is open for inspection and in it his correspondent says pton the erson who is said to have made this speech before said committee I com-mittee did not open his mouth before it unless in private conversation t unles The colonels friends are indignant over I this accusation of bad faith and protest that not only did the colonel delhtjr a speech but that it was classic and ought to be permanetly preserved as a masterly Ii argument in favor of justice for the white metal The foamy wars raging over that Cleveland speech are heard all over the territorY Meanwhile the colonel sits in eawhie te his elegant study and smiles The colonel feels confident of becoming a Senator D rnd says he can afford to be amused at itiflse Goodwins virulence 1 iVblle the big family jar is going on c Miiung the Republicans the Democrats j dealand lead to a great calm stealing over the stormrent camp of the Republicans Koslstcrliij AVomcit Registrar Crowley of the Second precinct yesterday took time toy the forelock and began the registration of women on his own hook with fair success suc-cess Registrar Crowley has made up his Regstrar i is just as well to cause the women to register and then regster if the courts decide they have the right to vote they will be on the list So he i carrying a separate book and is entering the names as he goes along I the courts dccFde the women wo-men have the elective franchise then Crowley will be ahead of his companions com-panions while if the decision is contrary con-trary all he has to do is to lay the work aside and declare that his I trouble compensates him for his pains Martha Hughes Cannon is the first woman to register She was enrolled by Registrar Crowley yesterday together to-gether with several other women among them being Amelia Folsom Young In connection with this action on his part there may be those who will protest against i but on the whole it appears to be a wise proceeding Inasmuch as the decision a the court I will be made public soon there can I be no harm done and were the matter i postponed until a later day it would I be specially appropriate Suppose the registration matter were taken into court and kept there until say three or four days before election it would be a matter of impossibility to enroll 1 the women of this territory under those circumstances where if they I were enrolled in separate lists all would be well The women of the city are especially anxious to become registered and the registrars in this city report a willing to become ness nay an eagernessto citizens which would astonish those citzens who have been claiming that the women wo-men do not want to votes vote-s Republicans Are AnSlons I hope the courts will decide that the women have not the right to vote said a prominent member of the Oqueer club yesterday I the decision de-cision is the other way it will complicate cate matters in this county to such an I i extent that it will be difficult to say just where we will land I realize that most of the women throughout the i territory are Democratic fact I I ae Democratcin think a vast majority of them outside I o Salt Lake will go against us The Republicans so far however have felt secure in Salt Lake county They I have placed themselves behind that majority of 1400 and have believed that it would not be possible to overturn I over-turn it this fall But just now our canvass is showing us something remarkable re-markable A great many of our Republican I Re-publican voters hundreds in fact I come from that class of men who are I living a bachelors and therefore I cannot double their strength This will have a potent effect for the Democrats But there is another thing on which we must count In this city there are I i enough servant girls from the outside counties to completely swamp our majority ma-jority I tell you if women vote this land fall I do not know where we will C Chairman Cannon a Caiielidute George M Cannon chairman of the territorial committee has been announced an-nounced by some friends as a candidate candi-date for the legislature There is no I joke about i this statement is fact cold hard fact George lives in the ward which is called Sugar House and thinks he has a good chance of winning This is something of a surprise to the members of the party who have been placed in possession of the information infor-mation When George was selected it was with a view to securing a man for the place who would not be hampered ham-pered by any desire to get in public office This was the objection to Cranethat he was presumed to be after the governorship and therefore would not be a fit man for the place inasmuch as he might be using the position for his personal advancement positn But now all this is knocked into a cocked hat and the party is is as bad a muddle as before But the party need not worry to any great extent George will not be nominated nom-inated He has a man in his own ward who will jar all his calculations into a jumble That man beat George once before and can do i again He is none other than McKeag the deputy recorder re-corder who has announced himself for the same place George is seeking I and who will doubtless get there Last fall when George was up for honors Me and his friends turned him down in his own ward and can do so again they claim And it is safe to assert that a man who does not carry his own ward this fall will not be nominated nomi-nated by either party Besides McKeag is far and away the more popular man of the pair He is one of the boys as it were He is a wireworker from the ground up and can give Cannon cards and spades and run the game out while the latter is wondering whether or not little casino has been played rcKeag has it is given out secured the support of a majority of the Republicans Re-publicans in his ward and it is fair to presume there isnt a man in the ward who has not pledged himself to the former resident of the Second precinct pre-cinct i But there will be a fight there the though it hottest kind of a fight even bp onesided Cannon will make a struggle for the place and his friends who live outside the ward will make P big effort to assist him The outcome out-come of the struggle will toe awaited with interest a Colored Republican Row The CraneTrumoo ring has obtained ob-tained control of the colored Republican can vote of this city This is not so heavy a statement as it might seem at first sight however and the ringleaders ring-leaders need not congratulate themselves them-selves on a big victory The recent ensus of Salt Lake county shows that the colored element forms an I almost inconsiderable factor in our I population There are only 262 persons per-sons in the whole county However I a TneoLfng Of the Lincoln Republican club was held last night inthe old council chamber in the Wasatch building Ii build-ing for the purpose of electing a nresldent for this campaign During the proceedings there was a lively row I between Ben Nesbitt and the Crane faction with the result that Xesbitt I was thrown out and the police patrol was called In the end Bruce Johnson I was elected president o the club Johnson Is said to toe one ot the ward Johnson men of Trumbo and Crane and his I election is a victory for them flegistrars at Work Registration work has been begun in earnest Chief Registrar Wilson and his deputies have established themselves them-selves in the Galena block and yesterday yes-terday morning all the force were out to register legal voters In regard to the registering of women i was decided after lengthy consideration to await the decision of the court at Ogden as to whether or not women will have the right to vote at the fall election Continued on Page 3 t i b |
