Show JOINT BUILDING NEWS Mayor Baskin Does Not Fear the Sewer Contractors BillBOARD BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS BOA WILL MEET TONIGHT TO WRESTLE wiTh THE PRESIDENT Water Work Matters of Interest License Collections Will Be Forced Appropriation Lbt Sign oil Prolmtc Court anti Inrriage licenses Tnx Notices Going Out Ilapldly Other Matters of Interest Inter-est From the City and County Mayor Baskin is in no wise concerned over the bill for shortage filed by the gravity sewer men The mayor is firm in the belief that the extra measurements measure-ments called for by the contractors are not according to the contract That contract is an ironclad one he said yesterday I was drawn to protect the city and I am confident the Sewer men will get nothing they are not entitled to under its provisions In relation to the charge made by the contractors for work removing dirt where slopes were run along the excavation ex-cavation I do not see how the sewer cavalon men can get anything extra The city is not responsible for the condition of the ground where the trench was sunk I do not remember of any large contract con-tract having been performed where the city was not sued afterwards continued con-tinued Ms honor I was the case on the Parleys canyon conduit and the city Prleys won have no fear of the out qatne in this case The board of public works will have a meeting to consider this matter It is expected that all the members will be present together with the contractors contrac-tors and their attorneys and a complete com-plete discussion of the question will oe had Some action will have to oe taken soon in relation to the sag in the sewer north of the Warm Springs The city has this work to do the contractors con-tractors having been exonerated In this connection it appears from statements state-ments made that the work was done in a very careless manner the chief Inspector having repeatedly notified the city that the ground there was in a bad condition and should be piled Instead In-stead of piling a raft was built across the morass a raft consisting of plank nailed crosswise of each other and the sewer built on that Of course it settles set-tles I is settling still and there maybe may-be reason to have the whole business taken out and replaced If this is done the expense will be very heavy The sewer is settled three feet in the centre and is said to be going down still although very slowly The board has all this to consider The subcommittee having the decision de-cision of the arbitrators on the Farrell bill met yesterday and considered the case but did not complet the work and will resume today Farrell is very nervous over the manner in which he is being treated I is somewhat odd that all the foreign contractors should be paid off and allowed to get early settlement while he is kept waiting for more than two years The architect seems to have been prejudiced against the contractors in this matter as in every instance they have testified against the justice of the claim Unless something is done soon the matter will be taken into court and enforced the decision of the arbitration board In the matter of the bill for the flowers on the grounds of the joint building which has been before the I council for some time and has been opposed Ty members who embrace every opportunity of going contrary to the mayor it appears that when the bill was contracted the allowance of 2000 for the maintenance cf the grounds had not been exceeded This matter will be brought before the council in a tangible form and that body will be asked to allow the account ac-count The parties who furnished the plants are not at fault and ought to be paid In relation to these plants the season sea-son approaches when they will have to be taken up and removed from the grounds I is anticipated they will be stored at the green houses In Liberty Park which may be large enough for the accommodation of all I this is so next year the grounds can be setout set-out with plenty of good stocky plants and there will be enough left over to supply a space as large again as that occupied now The mayor said yesterday yester-day that he favored using a good portion por-tion of the lawns next year by making additional flower beds which would lessen the cost of maintenance and greatly add to the beauty of the place By designing other plats in the center cen-ter of the green places a great many plants can be used The mayor signed the appropriation list passed at the last meeting of the council yesterday I will be ready for payment tomorrow Deputy Treasurer May has begun his fall crusade against the small dealers of the city who have not as yet paid their license A large number of notices no-tices are being mailed and unless they are followed by a speedy settlement legal action will he begun There are several hundred of dollars due the city now and i wilkall be collected According to the statement of the superintendent of waterworks the water supply of the city will have to be increased next year As it is now when the hours for sprinkling arrive the pressure is reduced by all the water takers using hose at the same time and the efficiency of the fire service ser-vice is greatly impaired The superintendent superin-tendent says that if the snows this winter should not happen to be heavy the situation next summer would be very bad indeed The fires along city creek and in other places in the hills have impaired the foliage to a great extent and the snow which falls will not have the chance of remaining as i has heretofore While the waterworks water-works department did all possible to suppress these fires still i was impossible im-possible to stay them entirely and asa as-a result conditions are not very good for the saving of water by holding the snows There is nothing done as yet in the matter of attempting to collect for the water used in running tHe elevator in the Hotel Templeton The superintendent superintend-ent says there is no direct manner in which he can proceed While he is satisfied the water has been used for two years he cannot see his way clear to tackle the question He will ask the council to give him an idea of procedure and will be gull t as they direct Over on the County side of the building build-ing matters are quiet being between hly and grass as the saying goes Notices are being sent out to taxpayers taxpay-ers calling on them to come in and cash up The business will be complet edby the 20th and those who do not get them right soon need not worry as they will be reached in time Some taxes are being paid now but the rush has not commenced A marriage license was yesterday issued is-sued to Fergues Lord aged 24 of Murray Mur-ray and Mary Gyge aged 22 of this city Probate Court Matters in probate court were quiet yesterday the only business done being be-ing the entering of a decree of due and legal notice to creditors in the estate of Adelaide E G Hampton and granting grant-ing a petition to sell 1000 sheep belonging be-longing to the estate of James Gordon |
