Show A TROFIOAfc Tj1 Attorney McEnenr Fined IQiO For Contempt of Court United States Commissioner Green mans court was yesterday afternoon the scene of quite a little excitement The cases of The People of the Territory Ter-ritory against Mamie Lee Lou Riley and May Doe described as sports who were arrested by the polica on Saturday evening on warrants sworn to by Detective A E Franks charging them with vagrancy were called up for hearing Attorney Barlow Ferguson Fergu-son appeared in the role of prosecutor and the girls were defended by J E McEneny The cases grew out of the effort of some of the Commercial street property owners to prevent the members of the deml monde from settling on Commercial Commer-cial street and I is stated that they were the instigators Of the arrests Attorney McEneny at the outset said that he had entereda protest a n taxpayer tax-payer against the territory being put to the expense of prosecuting these cases for the benefit of private individuals individ-uals and that County Attorney Whitte more had not authorized the bringing of the suit and had informed him that It had been arranged that there would be no costs in the case unless a conviction con-viction was secured and that In such event the defendants would have to pay the costs On the strength of the alleged arraignment Mamie Lee signed an affidavit drawn by her Attorney At-torney stating that she believed she could not get a fair trial before Commissioner Com-missioner Oreenman for the reason that the court was an Interested party and asked for a change of venue Mr McEneny also filed an affidavit setting up that County Attorney WhIttemore had informed him of the l arrangement arrange-ment as to costs Attorney Ferguson proceeded to question Miss Lee as to her reasons for demanding a cnange of venue when Mr McBneny told her not t answer an-swer Ferguson persisted and McEn eny also persisted In telling his client not to answer The court ordered the witness to answer and still McBneny admonished her to keep silent The atmosphere became tropical and the court fined Mr McEneny 550 for contempt and ordered him into the custody of Captain D novan until the fine was paid The 4captaln essayed to arrest the offending attorney when a war of words ensued as to the power of the captain to make the arrest In the absence of Q committment The result was that McEneny was allowed to go and the cases were continued until Thursday but the fine is taxed up against hIm Nervousness 1i caused by drinking cheap tea often colored with poisonous matter Blue Cross tea Cros Ceylon Is absolutely J solutely pure Jj |
