Show RICHARD REALFS END Brouglxt io LHU By Iie erc0iiug Iii < iuiiy o f Friends Oakland Cal Feb 26 Durins the past two weeks some English tourists visiting California have been visitng CUfornia making inquiries concerning the fate of Col Richard Realf of whom they had beard no word since 1X78 Bealfs memory h cherished in literary liter-ary circles in the east and England but In California his name is known to but a few and in Oakland where he died he has been utterly forgotten Even the bare record of his suicide is not to be found in the usual documents docu-ments His grave is unmarked ana un known and his disappointed friends returned to Ban Francisco last night Richard Realf was born in Uchfield near Lewes Sussex England in 1S34 and came to America in 1854 He made his home in western Pennsylvania and a quarter of a century before his poems found favor in the eat in 1S6C the Atlanta Monthly published An Old Mans Idyl by Realf which Clarence Clar-ence Steadman Quotes in his work on American literature The poet enlisted on the Union side during the war and served on the staff of Genera John F Miller He came to California In 1878 on account of matrimonial mat-rimonial trouble and his wife followed hIm On Monday Oct 27 of that year I he registered at the Windsor hotel in this city He put in no appearance the I next day and on Wednesday his friend S F Tappan found him dead In his room A bottle of laudanum on the table and two letters one to Colonel Tappan and the other to General John P Miller told the story Scarcely any attention was paid to the suicide The local papers spoke of the dead man a a gentleman of culture cul-ture almost unknown in this community commu-nity Th6 letters told the story of his domestic troubles but the story was pot made public |
