Show A SmlH I DF F SALT lAK ijfAO YELLOW FEVER CAlUlmD1IIlI OFF Dr CUBA J F Sears Returns From Santiago and Brings tile News of the Death of Dalton and Sibley J F Sears who went away from this city at the outbreak of hostilities with Spuln being attached to the army as a packer returned yesterday emaciated emacI-ated and worn He brought the sad news that A B Sibley who went away at the same time dIed several weeks ago of yellow fever Dalton another packer who went away about the same time also died Sears was selected to go wit Roose elts rough rIders and was attached to that command He was with the regIment regI-ment during the campaign before Santiago San-tiago and particIpated wIth It in the hardships it endured SIbley was attached at-tached to another commlll1d as was also Dalton Yellow fever brpke out among the packers and Dalton Siblej and Sears were all attacked The latter also suffered suf-fered from malaria and 100315 very unlike un-like his former self havinlost about forty pounds in weight The curIous part of the matter Is that the death of Sibley was not reported re-ported before this time His family has been sendIng him letters but beyond be-yond the endorsement on the envelopes when they came back here of dead or not here they knew nothing post tiely although they feared the result Sibley was a man who was well lilted I here and had many friends who wlll be grieved to learn of his untimely end He was a collector and real estate dealer and was uniformly successful in business during the time when there was business here At the time the war broke out he engaged as a packer and after going to Missouri for a time was ordered to Cuba Dalton was quite well known here and had many friends Sears relates that conditions down at Santiago were very severE The country coun-try looks wen enough generally he said but when you come to live there it Is tough The water is terrIble and that Is what caused so much illness It is full of malaria All of us had yellow fever and I am about the only one who pulled through I have been on the road home eleven days from New York taking it as easy as I qould and am very glad to get home I can tell you I was wIth the rough riders and they were a great regiment to be with too They got away in good time too for the rest of us who were left behind had a hard time of It I |
