Show COMMENT ON SENATORIAL CANDIDATES Salt Lake Bee Yllliam H King was born In 1863 in Fillmore City Millard county Utah On his fathers side he Is of New England stock the Kings having come to New England In 163Q The fdmlly was prominent promi-nent having among its members Rufus King the great federal leader and Gay eror Sam King of Massachusetts who was governor during the war of the re beilion His paternal grandmother was of the John Hancock family His mother was born at New Orleans but her parents were a from Ireland nt fifteen years of age the subject of this sketch spent his time on the farm and the ranch at that age he attended the academy at Provo remaining re-maining two years In the fall of IS0 he started to the university and was sent to Enland a few months later asa as-a missionary of the Mormon church He then labored In the British Isle spending some little time In Ireland visiting visit-ing relatives returned to the United relatves States and spent several months In New York MassachUsetts and Michigan returned re-turned to Utah and was elected before be-fore reaching his majority to several oillces In Millard county and Fillmore more City Until l9 he has resided there During that time he served as county attorney at-torney for Millard county for four years and was assessor and collector for four years and also held the office of count clerk and numerous offices In Fillmore City During that time was also engaged in the lumber business In 1S was elected elect-ed to the legislature representing Millard and Juab counties When Cleveland was trst nominated for president though na tonal party lines were not drawn in the territory he made many speeches In the central part in behalf of Democracy and urged a division on party lines In IS he was admitted to the bar and went to Ann Arbor and graduated from the law department ai 1687 was again l feJa to the legislature representing the former counties While at Ann Arbor took some Interest In politics and made speeches for the Democracy In the state Vas admitted to the supreme court of MichIgan Mich-Igan In April 158 In January 1559 re moveq to Provo and formed a partnership partner-ship with S R Thurman apil George Sutherlad and had an extensive practice with them In the fall of that year 1fr Sutherland withdrew and the firm continued con-tinued as Thurman King Continued to practice law at Provo until August 1S when he was appointed judge of the Fourth distrIct court of Utah and member of the supreme court being appointed by Mr Cleveland Prior to the appointment as judge he held several offices in Utah county being city attorney for Prove City and various other cities in the county was also county attorney and attorney for ti1S Mormon church 0rtg central part of the territory and < speeches In various pars of the territory Always advocated a division on party lines as a settlement of the local Cues Hons allctng the territory was always n member Qf the Peoples pay until its dissolution and then commenced organlz ation of Democratic cubs In Utah county and other parts Of the state While on the supreme bench JUdge KIng wrote opinions in a number of Important cases notably the Ihlede case Amy case and dissenting opinion In the Enzensperg er CS involving the validity of the territorial ter-ritorial jury law Space will not admit of a quotation from this opinion which Is woul undoubtedly have taken first place had I not been for his refusal to accept re nomination as tas representatIve butte but-te fact that the importunities of his l friends who believed his acceptance absolutely esSential to the best interest of the party were disregarded hac embittered em-bittered them and he can now hope but to play second or even third fiddle In view of al the circumstances ate due consideration of the merits of the respec respc tve candidates anti the requirements of the preset situation we join In the general belief that A W McCune of Salt Lake City is the right man He has successively and successfully been a woodchopper a freighter a shep man a cattleman a mining man and a railroad builder In all thee vocations his record has been honorable his course consistent and upright his success uniform He Is now a leader of finance an organizer 01 industry I In-dustry a captain of enterprise r u i in duMral development He has th brains to set In motion the forces that give employment em-ployment to our armies of bred winners win-ners He should be put Into a position by which he will be the better able to do this br bringing capital into this state for the development of our resources Our conditions demand a man of his financial ability and the time Is exactly opportuno or the election itfa business opporu1c for eleto o man ana nnancler to
