Show INSURGENTS AND IINSUR TURKS FIGHTING Presence of Foreign Warships 0 Has Little Effect SKIRMISH AT MALAXA TURKS DEFEATED ALTHOUGH OUTNUMBERING CHRISTIANS CHITIAS Further Fighting Has Occurred in I the Vicinity of Heraklion Turkish Turk-ish Warship Begins a Bombardment Bombard-ment but Her Commander Receives Re-ceives Word from the Powers that He Must Silence His Guns or Take the Consequences Excellent Excel-lent Discipline Among the Insurgents In-surgents 0 Canea Feb SThe presence of foreign for-eign warships off this port has not had the effect of preventing fighting between the insurgents and Turks save In the town itself where a comparatively small force of sailors and marines were recently cently landed for the purpose of preserving preserv-ing order A skirmish occurred today at Malaxa a short distance from Canea in which the Turks were worsted although al-though they outnumbered the Christians The fighting at Malaxa arose from a fruitless attempt on the part of the Moslems aided by a detachment of Turk bJ ish troops to revictual the blockhouse where the Turkish garrison has been grison blockaded for a number of days The Moslems made a sortie buj the insurgents insur-gents were prepared for just such a move aId attacked the party furiously finally driving them back During the fighting a heavy fire was directed upon the Christians from the Turkish arsenal InCan In-Can ea I had however very little effect ef-fect and the Christians still maintain the positions held by them prior to the fgh turther Further fighting has occurred in the vicinity of Heraklion As hertofore the insurgents under Korkuras repulsed the Turks A Turkish warship in Suda bav today began the bombarument of a position posi-tion occupied by Insurgents but before she had done much firing her commander com-mander received word from the representatives repre-sentatives of the foreign powers that he must silence his guns or take the consequences conse-quences This is the second time that the insurgents near Suda bay have been fired on by a Turkish warship The Greek Korahas whQ at the head of 5000 Insurgents has invested the town of Heraklion has given permission to the Turks to leave the place In order that they may cultivate the lands adjacent to the town His action however is looked upon with suspicion by many Moslems they believing that it Is his intention in-tention to benefit from the labors of Turks by selling their crops when they are ripe On the other hand those who are acquainted witn the character of Korakas declare that he Is a just and I humane man and that his only object in permitting the Turks to till the field Is to I prevent suffering from famine among the women and children In the town I Several British and Italian officers recently re-cently visited the camp of Korahas where they were treated with much courtesy They were astonished by the excellent discipline maintained among the Insurgents and by tne perfection of their organization all of which Is due to Korahas who appears to be a born leader of men He Is enthusiastic In the support of the cause of the Cretans and his force will prove no unimportant factor should Turkey attempt to quell the insurrection I In-surrection by force of arms Tewflk Pasha the new military governor arrived I ar-rived here today and paid visits to the several consuls |
