afternoon escorted by General Ludlow and his staff and troop L of the Seventh United States cavalry Ho marched at the head of 2000 armed Cuban horsemen and footmen There was great enthusiasm The festivities today in honor of the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Cuban struggle for independence were most spontaneous and widely enthusiastic Havana has never seen anything Hue it before The whole town was decorated and the streets were packed with a crowd twice as largo as that which turned out at tho Garcia funeral Generar Gomez arrived on the edge oC the town from Marlanao at 1230 procession stopped frequently eventually filing Into the main streets of I the city passing Central park and arriving arriv-ing at 2SO oclock at the palace The I Prado and other avenues were lined with patriotic clubs taking up various positions posi-tions of vantage andthenjoining the procession pro-cession as It passed the palace from a balcony of which the procession was viewed by General three yoke of oxen One represented the Cuba of yesterday rercente a woman standing with maracled hands 1 a I broken wheelbarrow and other signs of desolation at her feet the other the Cuba deolaton today a woman under a nail smiling and surrounded by evidences of I prosperity The contrast was very effective effec-tive and everywhere applauded A handsome carriage containing ladies and decorated with large Spanish Amen can and Cuban flags draped together with white ribbons and bearing t e legend Unity peace and concord was vociferously Uni ously cheered Still another float represented I repre-sented a Cuban woman holding an American Ameri-can Hag with the shattered crown oi Spain at her feet No fewer than 25000 people were In line requiring1 three hour to pass a given point pomthe horses of the Cuban cavalry are scrawny and Illfed and the cavalrymen scrwn are clad In a vague Cuban uniform All carried Remington carbines with nondescript non-descript bundles of clothing and bedding They marched In lines of twos The infantry in-fantry occasionally kept step and as they passed the palace presented arms Most of them carried Cuban flags stuck in their rifles rUI enthusiasm of the crowd was directed direct-ed to General Gomes and certain well known commanders rather than to the I troops themselves As compared with the way the American populace welcomes back soldiers the
