Show I THE HARDSCRABBLE MINE An Old Producer That is Making a Good Record Five miles north of Marysvale four and onehalf miles southeast of Belknap situated in the Henry mining district lies the Hardscrabble nee Antelope mine This property through bad management manage-ment has been lying dormant for about 13 years until recently and consequently to the mining public of the present its merits are not generally known says the Marysvale Pioneer The cause of its lying I in idleness will be readily noticed in the following recital The Hardscrabble was discovered early I in tho spring of 1SS2 by one Joseph Smith and located under the cognomen of the Antelope which name it bore until last I sprint when it was relocated under the name of the Hardscrabble which name t now bears After its location in 1SS2 Smith with the aid of one man worked i for several months then It was sold to D P AVheden and other silent partners TVheden shipped several carloads of ore to Salt Lake City and obtained tine results re-sults He then contracted with George T Henry and Thomas Ferguson who were operating the Ferguson mill to stamp tea tons per day which amount was greater than he was able to extract from 1 the mine without the aid of capital I which he didnt have and to supply the demand he began shipping the dumps which ran the ratio down so low that the working did not pay Hence Wheden in 1S04 made an assignment for the benefit of his creditors Thus ended the development develop-ment of the Antelope mine for that period Today may be seen in the offlce of George T Henry assayer at this place a record of over O assays taken from ore obtained from this property which yield an aVerafre of SO ounces in silver and 12 in gold tnus showing that it was the result re-sult of bad management and not a valueless value-less property that resulted in Whcdens failure The Hardscrabble as is explained above was relocated by Neilhen Bros of Monroe Mon-roe in 1S9G and on the 22nd day of July last a lease and bond was let to J A Jacobsen and Arthur Buckbce running for a period of IS months They are working work-ing a force of four men and indicntions are so encouraging as to induce them to increase which they will do as soon as facilities can be made for boarding the men to a force of 20 men By cross cutting and drifting In a westerly direction they have caught the vein at a depth of 70 feet They have drifted 40 feet crosscut 3S feet sunk a shaft 5 feet run three side drifts from shaft 10 30 and 40 feet respectively res-pectively following ore all the way out JThcv have upraised four stations and are now hoisting by horse power They have an average vein of over four feet of ore that will mill J40 all through Samples can be obtained that run 500 in gold and silver The mine i surrounded by an unlimited un-limited quantity of the finest timber for timbering lagging and building tmbering buiding purposes and water in abundance can be obtained from three sources I is accessible from i I all directions and special pains have been taken to make the roads all first class leading to i Withal the Hardscrabble Hard-scrabble is one of the most promising mines in southern slope it is estimated es-timated that over 1000 locations have been made within the past two months and still the work of staking out claims goes on Hon Richard Mackintosh who has returned re-turned from his visit to Park City states that but little ore is moving in the camp as snow is needed to make the hauling good He says however that there is lots of ore broken down at the mines ready for shipment as soon as it can be sent down to the samplers and railroads Mr Mackintosh was well pleased with the outlook of the district and reports that the mines are all looking well the Ontario
