Show RALINS NOT A CANDIDATE Our Joe Formally Retires From the Senatoria Contest LETTER TOxS R THDRB1AN I Has Had the Matter Under Consideration Con-sideration For Some Time r I The Iiiforiiiutioji Created Quite aStir a-Stir in Political Circle Men Who Arc Mentioned us the Standard Bearer Sonic Sugrgcbtions Regard lug thc Assessed Valuation of This County I Hon S R Thurman who returned to Provo from this city yesterday afternoon af-ternoon bore with him a piece of political po-litical information of peculiar importance import-ance and interest In brief it is that Mr Thurman some days ago received a letter from Mr Rains authorizing him to state to the public that he Mr Rawlins is not and H not be a candidate for the United States senate Mr Thurman hesitated to make such a announcement until he had had a personal interview with Mr Rawlins in which the latter reiterated his statement state-ment In pursuance of that conversation conversa-tion Mr Thurman has permitted the statement to be published I is as follows In the political struggles pf the past I feel that you and the Democrats of your county have been among the moS disinterested and steadfast supporters of myself mad the principles far which I have stood Ait the same time I am not unmindful of the great debt of I gratitude which I owe to that host of 1 loyal friends who reside in all the counties coun-ties and who have been unsparing in I their efforts to do me honor The intensity in-tensity of this feeling on my part is in no degree diminished by the fact that I their later efforts have resulted only in their disappointment and chagrin I I shall not permit them to make another such sacrifice As my name is being I mentioned and considered in connec mentone I tion with the election of 0 United j I States senator by the next legislature i I legisla-ture I desre it to be understood that I am not and will not be a candidate for that office and I hereby request that my name be eliminated from all the calculations in connection with i As for myself I accept as final and contentedly acquiesce in the verdict of one year ago The letter states in another part that Mr Rawlins has had this matter under un-der consideration for a long time and I that he has reached this conclusion after mature deliberation This information created quite a stir in political circles yesterday and inasmuch inas-much as Mr Rawlins had all along been looked upon as the logical candidate candi-date of his party there was much speculation as to who would be the standard bearer The names of Hon R C Chambers Hon C C Richards Hon S R Thur man Hon R N Baskin and Judge O Y Powers were frequently mentioned and the last named was seen by a Herald reporter I am not a candidate in any sense replied Judge Powers The fact that I a chairman of the state committee willingness to and had announced my wiiness continue a such should my party desire de-sire me to ac is a sufficient answer to any who would mention me in connection con-nection with the senatorship I necton Editor Herald Your issue of this morning intimates that an increase is likely to be made on the present assessed tax valuations in by the state equalization this county te SLt equaizOtion board Such a proceeding would be mos unjust to the people of this county a the valuations as already placed byte by-te assessor for this year are in very many cases fa in excess of the cash value of the property or what could begot be-got for it at a well advertised sale To increase such high valuations would mean to very many people in this county financial embarrassment of the most severe kind in order to try and hold their property or else to le i go entirely at a tax sale 1 is a question tion in this county and especially in this city with tine bulk of the people or a least a very heavy percentage as to how the rates already assessed are to be met on account of their excessively I exces-sively high character and to place the I bure still greater would result in extreme ex-treme and unnecessary oppression Before Be-fore even contemplating such a measure meas-ure values throughout the state should be evened up and counties outside of Salt Lake excepting perhaps Ogden city be made to bear their just and proper proportion of state taxation There is no question at present but that the outside county valuations are excessively low when compared with this county and that those counties asa as-a rule know nothing of the oppression in this respect which is felt here This is an injustice to this county and the state equalization board should correct cor-rect it Men owning good farms with homestead and all equipments do not pay a much tax in many outside counties coun-ties as persons owning a small home in this city These things shouldvbe made more even before talk of raising values in this county is indulged in I is to be earnestly hoped that no such idea is seriously contemplated When its effect began to be realIzed there would be suffering and indignation indigna-tion beyond belief in this county as the people cannot afford it The appropriation bill passed by the last legislature was on a par with many of its other actions largely moons moon-s and unreasonable and it ocr tainiy behoove every lover of good law and justice to use every effort t put in office hereafter men of comprehensive compre-hensive judgment and good commonsense present common-sense Such evils will be needed BERNARD to correct |
