Show educational t A WRIT N CODE IN SCHOOL Is such a thin thing 0 necessary I 1 shall an answer swerin in tb the e affirmative then why is the question that follows immediately first let us consider the pub lie school by itself a t few mo 1110 merits ments what is it A little com mon wealth or society a minia ture republic in short with presiding officer the teacher A living thinking active iti intelligent telli td 0 ent body or unit that grow and develop either bettar or worse now if tile public school comes within the of the foregoing definition 2 or description at all then it seems self evident to me at least that a wi written itten code in accordance with which it must be governed is a necessity if not then must this one presiding officer include with within in himself and exemplify all three departments of government cut viz the legislative D the judicial and the exe executive autive the republic vanishes at once and a despotism takes its place and as in former days each teacher despot or tyrant goes into the schoolroom school room with a code of his own unlike that of any oth other er such personage in the county or state perhaps the result of such a state of affairs I 1 shall leave the reader to portray mentally if he can but in the progressive gres sive age in which we live a system of education with at least a semblance of uniformity throughout the county and the state is desired and ten tending dill to this end in our county a written code has been prepared and adopted now it is to this in general and to a few of its rules in particular that I 1 wish to invite the thoughtful attention of the patrons of of our public schools throughout davis county in order that we as teachers may have their support in carrying 0 out the same for the welfare of all concerned b t ane welfare of the children all will agree I 1 I 1 believe that the two main labors of the teacher are first to govern and second to instruct also that the teacher governs best who seems to govern least and instruct most not by giving the greatest quantity oi of bare facts but by teaching 0 the pupil how to study think and ac act t for himself now all this work may be materially lessened for the teacher to the great advantage of both parent and if parents will only operate cooperate co eo with and sustain the teachers and their elected servants the trustees tardiness absence and truancy are the three evils that are manifest to a greater or less degree in all our schools and the pernicious results of these are not I 1 dare say half realized by even the most thoughtful of parents rules whose object is to correct as far as possible these evils form an important part of our recently adopted code and while we deem each rule good in its place and all necessary yet it is those bearing on the three above mentioned evils that we especially recommend to the careful consideration of the pa patrons t of our schools that being convinced of the necessity of something of their nature they will lend their support to the enforcement of the same thus securing the benefits to be derived for their children the three rules may be here quoted if thought best hence when notice is given to any of the patrons of our schools to the effect that a son or daughter C has been absent or tardy I 1 would woula say to such do not look unkindly on such notification but answer it courteously and promptly giving tho the true reason for such absence or tardiness resting assured that the sole aim and object of the notification and its author is tile the welfare not only of tile particular pupil in queston question but of each and every pupil of the school F for or bear in mind that the example of each pupil has it its effect upon all the rest either for good or ill so also in to truancy neither parent nor teacher can call afford to allow so great an evil to go uncorrected nor can such au an offense bu bo treated lightly if we expect the moral and intellectual standard of the school to stand hiff high b irvin F fisher |
