Show REPUBLICAN PRESS OH SILVER REPUBLICANS It was inevitable that the call of Senators Teller Pettlgrew Cannon and others should meet with condemnation by the Republican press and themselves them-selves be repudiated They have never cared to face the facts as they are and frankly admit that they are no longer Republicans but such is really the case I was to be expected that the stalwart stal-wart Republican papers would attack the call They do Thus the New York Comol rcial Advertiser than which I there iS no more thoroughgoing Republican Re-publican paper in the United States says I There is no room in the United States for a Republican silver party The little clique of free coinage senators I and representatives who have issued a call for the creation of such an organization or-ganization will find their efforts fruitless fruit-less outside of the mining camps and the strongholds of prairie Populism The regularly chosen and accredited reglarlr Republican national convention held in St Louis last June emphatically demanded de-manded the maintenance of the existing exist-ing gold standard and pledged the whole power of Republicanism to the work of upholding the honesty of every American dollar This action I was larnetl indorsed by an overwhelming over-whelming majority of Republican voters vot-ers at the time when I took place The Republican party ratified it with absolute explicitness at the polls on Nov 3 The Republican position on the currency is fixed and final I Is as definite and distinct as the partys creed in regard to the rights of secession seces-sion or the policy of protection to American industries Republicanism stands for sound honest dollars worth 100 cents In gold as firmly as it stands for the enforcement of federal authority author-ity and for the supremacy of the nation na-tion tionThat That certainly states the position of the Republican party on the money I question and that was the question ques-tion whh determined the party standing of everybody last year The Boston Journal another Republican Repub-lican paper of recognized authority < I among adherents to Republicanism speaking of the address to the silver Republicans says That call for a silver Republican convention which Senators Teller Dubois Du-bois Mantle and some of their sympathizers sympa-thizers In office and out or It have issued is-sued from Washington Is a virtual confession that they despair of getting anything done for the white metal within the ranks of the regular Republican Re-publican organization Having come to this conclusion and not being altogether prepared yet togo to-go over to the Democracy these bonanza bo-nanza leaders are endeavoring to develop de-velop a new and separate party But why should they call themselves Republicans Re-publicans Silver Republicans Is as much a contradiction of terms as free trade Republicans Both honest money and protection are cardinai Republican principles and any organized body of men who reject these principles and withdraw from the Republican party because they reject them has no right to go about masquerading under the party name I The silver Republicans have a right Ito I-to take the name they have chosen though to the out and out free silver man Silver Republican seems like a contradiction in terms To attach the name Republican to the new party is a form of ancestry worship It signifies sig-nifies descent and connotes nothing as to present beliefs I and purposes aST te The movement should I have the effect to solidify into a homogeneous whole those Republicans who have repudiated I the platform of their old party but I who have not since identified themselves them-selves with any political party I will serve as a rallying point and in I politics this is always much |
