Show A jumbo ot of the forest the largest tree in the world lies iles broken and petrified at t the end of a defile in northwestern nevada its demert demen stalls lions are so great that those who know of its existence ex istance hesitate to tell tile the story because hardly expect to be believed but there is sufficient evidence to give the tale tala credit improbable tough though it may seem says cays the mineral collector this tree makes the monarchs of the Marl mariposa posa grove seem like Im impostors posters and compared to it the tallest pine grown on norwegian hills to lo be the mast of some great admiral Is 16 but a wand As tor the story ot its discovery it Is thus told by dad lynn of fresno and supported by other equally well known people babkin Bac kin 1860 a compan company of about 45 left red bluff to prospect the then unknown countr y beyond honey lake and surprise valley there were in the party lawyers butchers and shoemakers shoe makers but we were one sided on one point I 1 each individual felt positive rosi tive that this thir was the turning point of ills his existence and that bright shining gold in unlimited quantities would reward the rather unpleasant jaunt the indians we call went ban nocks were at that time raising hair and very many sudden moves mover were at times necessary in order to get rid of attentions finding but little gold in this bec tion we traveled toward baker county oregon there a country entirely denuded of timber except a few dwarf cottonn along the waterways close to the baker county line we came to an opening in the rocks about wide enough for our wagons to go through and on either side bide loomed precipices soo and coo feet high the crevasse was about IS 15 miles long and at its end just to tile the right of the trail we found a number of petrified stumps of different heights and sizes in their midat on the ground lay a monster tree somewhat Im bedded in inthe ahe soil it was completely petrified and from tile the clean cut features of the trunk seemed to have fallen after petri fica tion at its butt tills this tree was quite co 60 feet in diameter we ve nea measured its length with a tapeline tap cline it was feet feel long ion no limbs remained but in the trunk were clefts where apparently limbs had been broken off amber like beads of petrified pitch or gurn gum adhered to the sides of the trunk for a distance of feet or more where tile the huge trunk was broken squarely off the center seemed transparent and the growth marks showed in beautiful concentric rings its natural appearance was handsomer liand somer than any dressed marble or mosaic I 1 have ever seen een and all of us expressed the opinion that it would make a wonderfully beautiful floor and interior Interi oi finish for some grand building |
