Show COLUMBIAN exposition midway plaisance Plais anoe described wonderful exhibits esteemed editor CLIPPER in res ponce to a kind invitation I 1 take great pleasure in writing for the information of your readers something concerning chicago and the worlds fair I 1 had bad been traveling tri for something near twelve hours or perhaps longer 0 from the time I 1 left omaha I 1 was tired and weary of trying to sleep as the shades of night began to fado fade and the alie signs of the coming day began to apper r it was day y break and I 1 could look out upon the beautiful landscape of northern illinois BERM as it appears at the first down of lay day how long before well be in chicago I 1 asked eagerly for I 1 already beheld clusters and groups of houses that betokened the approach to a city well said some one sitting near to me we are in the suburbs now I 1 took consolation in the thought that it would not bo be long before I 1 would be making my way over terra firma to seek the hotel that my friend with whom I 1 was traveling held tickets for our accommodation therein we traveled on and on past sub erbs and tenements stately business blocks finally came into view clustered together in thickly settled portions of the town we saw and passed by large manufacturing plants until I 1 began to wonder at the magnitude and great extent of the city still we went on it seemed as though we had bad been traveling for about three hours before we came to a stop at the union depot this is a large and spacious structure built of brick and is very high alt although bought not nearly so high as many other buildings of the great city after passing through the turn stiles at the depot we were soon out into a very narrow and crowded street people were hurrying past in various directions wagons were jostling grating and rumbling over the rough stone paved streets As for me I 1 was nearly dazed and pura para lazed it seemed so much like a drewn dream my imagination had bad never conceived of such lucli a place high I 1 up into the sky towered what is t termed the sky high buildings of chicago some of these I 1 counted to be twenty stories high and was told there were some twenty two stories high off in the distance the buildings seemed from opposite sides of the to touch little time had I 1 to contemplate these sights the rushing crowd like confused waves of the ses sea impaled me with the desire to go 90 on after some dilli difficulty culty we learned that the illinois central depot where we wished to take train was over at the east cast side wa we were down to the west and centre after some difficulty we arrived at the family dormitt dormitory ry hotel at abut 10 a we had gazed upon the placid water 5 of lake for the first time iu in our lives water bilte as far out as we could see with larger and smaller vessels near tile the shore docks while some where driving their way far out upon the lake liere here and there were men and boys with bamboo rods and their fishing for the br bright and t tackle a ackle angling 0 g sparkling finny dwellers of the waters but we had bad not gone far I 1 before afore of the white the towers and domes worlds fair came into city the great v seiw caw truly beautiful and enchanting chant 39 was it to see these large aud and white while buildings in tile the distance some were roofed with glass others from the brightness ess of their covering glistened in tile the radiant sunlight past groves und and parks of oak and maple bo hold id on I 1 had ard taken you hotel and there retraced with me to the to tell you what w list I 1 saw my friend with tile the tickets we had purchased Salt lake walked with great magnanimity 0 up to the desk R and nd presented them the man mail at the desk eyed them codly and said they were worthless the company had bad assigned or busted but bul that lie he would ile he glad to take us in we could pay half price 25 cents and a ticket apiece a day SS as long as we stopped for a cot and room we concluded to stay until we could find a better place for this was a rickety fire trap of a building ing we finally found a better place closer in town just as cheap my friend has bus keepe the tickets as trophies of his experience I 1 suppose anyhow lie he stared awfully liard hard at them when he be found out they were valueless there were many others there talking in sotto gotto voice tones about their tickets as well as your humble servants I 1 have been writing for along a long time and have not told you as yet much about the great fair 1 I got there all right after many unlooked unlocked for delays I 1 fond my way to midway plaisance and interested there I 1 had read but little about the fair and knew not the nature of the place I 1 was in it is a long broad entrance or street about a mile in length lined on each side with various shows and exhibitions which if you wish to enter you have to pay admittance admi tance fees varying from 10 cents up to 50 cents arabs were riding around on camels gorgeously decked and arrayed in iii the finery of oriental manufacturers of silk gol gold d lace etc with which the saddles were trimmed in the show they performed various feats common to wild tribes of the desert such as fighting with swords etc there were dozens of features about this part of the fair that I 1 cannot take time to describe grottos cycloramas panoramas of mountain scenery the renown crater of Ki lanea villages of savage tribes and of those more or less civilized streets representing the streets of cities of the far east and of half civilized nations and villages representing those of the various civilized nations such as germany austria etc all reproduced as exact as can possibly be done there you can see the wonders of glass making glass wove into textile fabrics dresses anc costumes made of it you can be admitted to a turkish sli or moorish harem barem in these last are st at times exhibitions somewhat revolting vol ting Dg but I 1 think they are fo for r the of pondering to deprived popular tastes sometimes t there 11 ere are shows and you only see a part of the regular performance other times you may go out by n histake before you have seen all there a are re turkish persian chinese and japanese theaters also others representing represent in g those of different nations abroad as the performances tire are given in these abes enat nations ions I 1 was in the irish village and saw well dressed men and women kneeling and rev brantly kissi sig a stone that had been brought from froin ireland characteristic irish songs and jig dances were the main amusement 0 in the village during one of the jig dances the person 7 performing ler forming challenged a big fat policeman I 1 suppose a native originally from the sod to come and compete with him the policeman awoke from his lethargy so common to lis his class lie he pulled of his cost coat and threw down his bis hat ile he was greeted with cheers from the crowd hurrah for the copl cop I 1 hell get there in great style you see if lie he dant he JI e did too it was pretty jig e dancing both bat the policeman police mau and the dancer going through almost the same movements the policeman showed that lie he had bad not forgot his native n dances and performed them with th the best of good humor limmor ile he had on the regular rl g
