Show CONCERNING TRUSTS Bingham Utah July 26 Ed Editor I tor Salt Lake Herald In Herald there was an article headed A Trust Object Lesson which related a sal sad occurrence nce A young man manof manof of brains and education once the faithful employee of a trust Is now a waiter in a restaurant Through jealousy jealoUS he was discharged by the trust which h meant that he could not obtain employment any anywhere anywhere where in that line Of business Th pur purport purport port of thIs article Is evidently to show that trusts are a menace to society is It not Now I have hae several questions to ask not all trusts a menace to socIety In the same way what method do you pro propose propose pose to abolish this great evil It not a tact that the trusts have some good Qualities not the trusts method of production greatly cheapen production And economically speaking is not this a benefit to society not public ownership of those Institutions eliminate the evils of the trust without losing any of Its good qualities JOHN F OSBORN Bingham Utah Uta l trusts are a menace to society to the the extent that they re reduce reduce duce the opportunities of the young men of the nation natIons do not propose to abolish this great evIl We do not know that this s possible But in the event that Wil William Wilham liam ham J 3 Bryan Is ele elected ted president and the Democrats secure control of both houses of congress we hope to se see the trusts power to work evil curtailed by bythe the following methods First enforce meat ment of the present stringent anti antitrust antitrust trust law lav second the enactment of such additional legislation as may be needed neede to strengthen the present law third the removal of all tariff protection protection tion from such trusts as are enabled to the American market through the operation of the protective tariff but we have not discovered ered them trust method pro and at the sa same e time advances the cost to the consumer so It is the trust that reaps the benefit and not socIety The result Is further enrich enrichment ment of the c classes asses and further impO impoverishment of the masses desirability and effects of pub public lie lic are questions that are receiving the attention of the best thought of the nation Public owner ownership ship of monopolies would certainly re remove i move moe many of the trust evils of today and might possibly create conditions equally obnoxious Public ownership cannot come until the people are will willing willing ing to accept the principle of state so socialism socialism and to advocate something that the people will not now accept Is not the most direct way to reach the trusts |
