Show I 1 AFTERMATH OF THE STORMS property loss in kansas missouri and arkansas will reach beach a million milf f or more if ore houses blown away and crops destroyed great calamity to the farmers bodies found at winona I 1 1 kansas city mo july S reports t of the storms during the past three days show the entire eastern water shed from the rocky mountains to the I 1 nebraska and iowa lines and to texas were swept on friday night the severest blow carne came fields of grain that promised the most bountiful yield ot of many years were swept bare tt of vegetation eta tion the seas of rain were abetted in the wo work rk of destruction by tornadoes it Is too early eany vet to sum up the loss but the total is appalling and those to whom the angry elements spared life have little left to sustain it the stories of the storm are so similar I 1 that a statistical summary Is all there Is left to tell I 1 the storm focus embraced an area ot of square miles with the southwestern corner ot of missouri Misso url as a center the greatest loss ot of life Is reported from wiona where eleven corpses have been found with as many more missing 4 at baxter springs in southwestern kansas five were killed and eleven seriously injured by the cyclone that accompanied tile the storm one person was drowned at columbus and two at ottowa kan at van buren ark a mother and babe were drowned A family of five was encamped on the banks of fish creek indian territory nothing of them or their belongings was found except part of a wagon on a pile of driftwood at thomasville Thomas ville mo where the rainfall was tour four inches I 1 in one hour five persons were lost unconfirmed reports are received ot of loss of life as follows three as fayetteville ark one at paola ran kan one at richards kan six of a hunting party in indian territory this gives a known and probable J loss of thirty tour four lives this total i will be increased when the receding water permits of EL thorough search I 1 GREAT PROPERTY LOSS ir 1 the loss of property can be placed in ai I 1 the millions dwelling fences and farm buildings were carried off and ai highway and railroad bridges swept away thirty of eighty bull buildings dings in I 1 winona succumbed five residences I 1 church and warehouse went down at six bridges went out oi in russell county kansas about jeferson city mo many square miles growing grain were destroyed tl traffic on the fort scott memphis railroad Is temporarily suspended reports of damage to property other than above noted come from five points in kansas nine in missouri six in arkan sas and two in indian Terr territory ItoM tho the storm spent itself in illinois but having lost its force proved a blessing to I 1 the crops the above summaries are only a fraction of the loss of property the greatest burden falls upon the farmers as the season Is too far spent to plant A new crops the count rys granary has been cleared out the details of individual suffering and experiences would nil fill volumes and repeat the horrors of the johnstown disaster THE WINONA DISASTER I 1 spring springfield flold mo july 8 the reports of the flood at winona mo published f heretofore are now known to have told only a part of the horrors of tho the disaster 14 tj the bodies of rev G W duncan and daughter mattle and miss norma I 1 nevins were found under a large drift of broken timbers about a mile below winona and also the body of an unknown man stopping at one of the hotels hot het t i A terrible stench arises from the mass of hogs horses borses cattle and other animals drowned it Is charged that some visitors are stripping the bodies of everything of value 11 I 1 F for or several miles below winon may be seen been wagons and household goods of I 1 all kinds and dead animals over two hundred persons were Beaching yesterday for bodies the body of george evanss daughter was found this forenoon the body of X loyd Lloyd wrights daughter Is still missing |
